I work with struggling readers in small-groups throughout the day. I collaborated wtih the librarian this year to start a \"Rockstar Reader Challenge\" where students read a book, fill out a book review, and then add a star next to their name. They earn a prize once they reach the milestones of 5 books, 10 books, 15 books, and 20 books. Kids from all grade-levels love it so far, but especially third and fourth grade students. \r\nThe students I see want to participate, but struggle with choosing books that they enjoy and are appropriate for their reading level. There was one student in fourth grade who was really upset when we told him one of the rules of the competition was that the books had to be ones they haven't read yet. The donation you made allowed me to start a collection of chapter books in my classroom. I strategically chose books at every level, so I could help students select books no matter their age, grade, reading level, or interests. That one particular student that was upset chose a Magic Tree House book, and is excited to read as many as he can. My favorite way to engage struggling and reluctant readers is through reading series that have multiple books with the same characters and plot structure. \r\nI've used these books in various ways in my classroom so far. The first way is helping students select books for the library competition. The second way to choose books with kids that they will read for homework. The third way is doing novel studies while they're in the classroom with me. We read one chapter at a time while talking about the characters, setting, main idea, etc. Nothing makes me heart more full than turning a reluctant reader into an excited reader. Each time a student finishes a book and asks me to help them choose a new book absolutely makes my day. \r\nI want to genuinely and sincerely thank you for your donation. It's brought so much joy to me as an educator. More importantly, it's brought joy and excitement and motivation to read for many students already. These books will continue to do that for many years to come.","fullyFundedDate":1758481022639,"projectUrl":"project/chapter-by-chapter-growing-lifelong-rea/9374574/","projectTitle":"Chapter by Chapter: Growing Lifelong Readers","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Nicholas","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9716995_orig.jpg?crop=2203,2203,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1730991985855","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9716995"},{"teacherId":9846587,"projectId":8964334,"letterContent":"Our students love the calming lights in our room.
