My students are naturally curious and enjoy opportunities to build, code, test, and solve real-world problems. However, successful hands-on learning also requires the right equipment and an organized environment. Because of your generosity, my students now have additional tools that help them participate more confidently and independently.\r\n\r\nThe safety glasses have already become an important part of our classroom procedures. Before beginning building, testing, or engineering activities, students know that safety must come first. Having a classroom set of safety glasses means that every student can be properly protected while using tools, working with construction materials, or testing a project. The glasses also help students understand that following safety procedures is an essential part of working like real engineers and technicians. Instead of simply hearing about workplace safety, students are able to practice it during their projects.\r\n\r\nThe storage bins are helping us create a cleaner and more organized learning environment. Robotics and engineering projects require many small parts, wires, tools, electronic components, building materials, and unfinished student projects. When materials are mixed together or difficult to locate, valuable class time can be lost. The new storage containers give us designated spaces for supplies and allow students to find what they need more quickly. Students are also learning responsibility by returning materials to the correct containers after each activity. This organization makes it easier for us to move from one project to another and protects materials so they can be used again.\r\n\r\nThe classroom headphones give students the ability to watch instructional videos, complete online modules, and listen to directions at their own pace. This is especially helpful when students are working on different stages of a project. One student may need to review a coding tutorial while another is ready to begin testing a design. With headphones, students can access the support they need without interrupting classmates. The headphones also make our classroom more inclusive by giving students an opportunity to replay information, adjust the volume, and focus more closely on instructions.\r\n\r\nThe flash drives provide students with a reliable way to save, transfer, and protect their digital work. Students can use them to store coding files, engineering designs, research, presentations, photographs, videos, and electronic portfolios. They are learning that organizing and backing up digital work is just as important as organizing physical materials. The flash drives will also help students carry their work between computers when they need to continue a project or prepare a presentation.\r\n\r\nOne of the most exciting resources has been the Sphero Mini coding robot. The robot immediately captured my students' attention because it gives them a fun and visible way to see their code in action. Instead of only looking at commands on a computer screen, students can program the robot and watch it move, turn, change speed, and respond to their instructions. When the robot does not perform as expected, students must examine their code, identify the problem, make adjustments, and test again. This process teaches persistence and helps students understand that mistakes are a normal and useful part of engineering.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to use the Sphero robot in student-designed coding challenges. Students will work together to create obstacle courses, measure distances, calculate movement, program routes, and improve the robot's accuracy. They will document their ideas, test results, and revisions so they can explain how their programs changed over time. These activities will strengthen their coding, communication, teamwork, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills.\r\n\r\nThank you for investing in my students and our STEM classroom. These resources are helping us build a safer, more organized, and more engaging learning environment. Most importantly, they are giving students opportunities to explore technology, take creative risks, learn from mistakes, and see themselves as future engineers, programmers, designers, and problem-solvers.","fullyFundedDate":1787585172176,"projectUrl":"project/robotics-storage/10422301/","projectTitle":"Robotics storage","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Harrison","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10560108_orig.jpg?crop=2761,2761,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1784836202855","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10560108"},{"teacherId":10560108,"projectId":10405755,"letterContent":"Thank you for supporting our STEM and robotics students! Having places to store supplies will make it easier for students to find what they need and take responsibility for caring for our shared equipment.\r\n\r\nThese resources support the everyday work that goes into engineering projects. The polycarbonate sheets will give students material for building custom robot components, while the hex keys and deburring tool will help them assemble parts and smooth rough edges. The wire connectors will support circuit-building projects, and the earplugs will provide hearing protection during noisy shop activities.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to organize and label our supplies with students, then put the new materials to work as they design, build, test, and improve their projects. I have noticed an increase in student engagement and agency, especially because they have materials available to them without always having to wait for teacher assistance. The students can use the electric sharpener when needed without distracting their peers or myself. They do not like lengthy worsheets but they seem to welcome the idea of a booklet. The booklet stapler was the missing tool to help prepare and organize a whole semester's practice of the power standards. The mini whiteboard erasers and dry erase markers have made it easier for students to actively participate in lessons, practice new skills, and show their thinking. Students developed greater perspective-taking through discussions, reflection journals, and storytelling, while the \"Helping Hand Initiative\" fostered leadership and peer support in the classroom. They also applied mathematical skills to meaningful tasks such as budgeting and problem-solving to address classroom and school needs, turning empathy into action. Students attained expected mathematics growth as measured by Schoolnet assessments and benchmark data, while reflective and observational evidence showed increased collaboration, compassion, and willingness to support others. Overall, the project resulted in both strong academic progress and measurable growth in students' social-emotional competencies.","fullyFundedDate":1767130164743,"projectUrl":"project/compassion-in-action-building-empathy-a/9855826/","projectTitle":"Compassion in Action: Building Empathy and Leadership in Math","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Nemenzo","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9484683_orig.png?crop=400,400,x0,y29&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1723070239571","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9484683"},{"teacherId":9845860,"projectId":9610859,"letterContent":"Thank you for supporting our \"Fidgety Mathematicians\" project, and supporting our high school math classroom! Your generous donations of fidgets, snacks, and sanitizing wipes have made a meaningful difference in our students' daily learning experience.\r\nStudents use the fidgets during lessons, independent work, and assessments to help manage stress and stay focused—especially during longer problem-solving tasks. Snacks are available for students who arrive hungry or need extra energy during challenging lessons, helping them stay engaged and ready to learn. The snacks were also used for rewards when students went above and beyond. The sanitizing wipes are used daily to clean desks, calculators, and shared supplies, promoting a healthy and responsible classroom environment.\r\nWhen students first saw the materials, they were excited and grateful. Several asked if the supplies were really for them, and many thanked me right away. One memorable moment occurred during the teacher-led part of a lesson. One of my student who is always sleeping the class used a fidget to stay awake and focused which led to him participating in the lesson and understanding the concept. A few other students requested fidgets to use during the lesson. The room was noticeably more engaged and collaborative. If I see a student disengaged or a bit hyperactive, I would walk by and quietly hand them a fidget. This usually helps.\r\nYour support helped create a classroom where students feel cared for, focused, and ready to succeed. \r\nOne project that my students just completed was to create an Algebra portfolio with puzzles, games, comic, posters and other creative items. Students meet every Wednesday after school in the robotics room for continuous training, where they explore mechanical concepts using last year's competition robot. One specific project involved students driving the robot, identifying minor mechanical issues, and using tools to troubleshoot and make repairs together.\r\n\r\nThe next step will be the actual building of a new robot based on the newly released FIRST Robotics competition mechanisms, which will be announced in January.
