Students know that they have a safe space they can come to for a snack, which for many is the first thing they've eaten that day. Some stop by after school to grab a bag of crackers or nuts to eat at home. One Haitian girl gets a bag of Goldfish for her little brother. Your donation allows for a consistency and stability that may not exist in their life outside of school. \r\n\r\nIt is sometimes over these communions of crackers that students say the most profound or heartbreaking things. Last week two girls were discussing parenting styles over Cheez-Its and one said, \"They say a father is a girl's first love. I don't think so. I think a father is a girl's first heartbreak.\" A different girl on a different day mirrored this quote: \"We think my dad is trying to move out and stealing our stuff for his new place. We had 3 sets of forks and spoons, some cups and plates, and now they're all gone.\"\r\n\r\nI can't undo the actions of irresponsible adults in their lives. Having reliable, consistent tools at their fingertips has removed a major barrier and leveled the playing field for many students who did not have access to their own calculators.\r\n\r\nThis gift has not only boosted academic performance but has also increased student participation and confidence. It's amazing to see how something as simple as a calculator can spark curiosity, reduce frustration, and empower students to tackle challenging problems with independence. Spring Fever is real and these items help focus body and attention.\r\nThe pencil sharpener is amazing; students from other classes have even dropped by to use it.\r\nThe LEGO created a great lesson on the building blocks of an education. Each block represented a credit and students created a Brick Wall graduation plan! \r\nStudents knew that a fellow student donated to the project, and thanked him for getting them everything! Clearly they are grateful. \r\n\r\nI am working with the 5 other teachers in my department to get materials for a new class we are teaching next year called Computing Foundations for a Digital Age. I explained to them about DonorsChoose and that strangers who have never even met them cared enough to donate money so they'd be able to eat when hungry. For many, it was surprising to hear that someone out there who isn't related to them would care about them. Hopefully it plants a seed about the importance of giving back if you are able.\r\n\r\nSometimes the snack a student gets from me is the only thing they've eaten all day. Sometimes it's the only thing they'll have to eat until evening, after a long span of athletic practices and/or part-time jobs.\r\n\r\nBut providing students with a few different healthy snack options does so much more than just satisfy their hunger. It makes them feel valued and seen, especially for shy students where I might not know much else about them, but I do know their favorite type of cracker! It also encourages them to advocate for themselves. Often times students I don't teach will hear about me from a friend of theirs who is in one of my classes, and the friend will want a snack, but some are too scared to ask. So the first time, my student will come in with their friend and say something like \"Can my friend have a snack? She's too shy to ask.\" And I'll say sure, introduce myself, ask their name, and have them choose a snack; and it's common for those kids to come back alone the next time to ask for a snack. \r\n\r\nI hope you take a moment each and every day to think of the teenagers at Warren Central High School who, each and every day, are positively impacted by your donation. It got a little loud that day, but students could see we aren't always as clear as we think we are.\r\nThe work skills posters have come in hand in many lessons. The day I hung them, an article was posted on NPR about Gen Z getting fired. Coloring while listening has taken off with the wall color poster and the plastic stands have helped students see paper options to color at their desks. \r\nThe wipes have helped keep the classroom clean. Students like to munch, but when accidents happen, they can clean up now. Just today we had an orange explode (long story for another time), and the wipes helped us get things tidy again. \r\nOn a personal level, the students have used up almost all the lotion already! It has helped with skin health and appearance. Additionally, having feminine products available has been so helpful. Students I don't even know have come to my classroom to ask for help! Our classrooms are the farthest point from the nurse's office, so having these items on hand saves about 20 minutes of 'commute' time that they can no save for class. \r\nI've been able to set up multiple charging stations to helps students keep their chromebooks running! The students were working on final projects for first semester and every charger and outlet was in use! It would have been a mess without these.\r\n\r\nI want to continue adding more flags to the classroom. The manipulatives have been loved well and need replacing soon.
