During a recent campus safety walkthrough, I was able to distribute the keychain face shields directly to our teaching staff and ensure every classroom crisis kit was fully stocked.\r\n\r\nSeveral teachers were visibly moved and deeply grateful—having proper safety equipment readily available means they can confidently step up in a emergency to deliver life-saving CPR while keeping both themselves and the victim safe.\r\n\r\nStudent & Staff Reactions\r\nWhen I introduced the updated crisis kits and keychains to my students and colleagues, the response was incredibly positive. My students were fascinated to learn how these small devices work to protect both the rescuer and the person receiving help. Seeing the new gear sparked a great, age-appropriate conversation about community care, campus safety, and the importance of being prepared to help others. Each day, students enter the room excited and often go directly to his enclosure to observe what Neil, our bearded dragon, is doing. His calm demeanor appears to contribute to a more relaxed classroom environment and has helped create a welcoming space for students. Many students also use the reptile area in our classroom as a place to reset when they need a brief brain break, allowing them to return to learning more focused and ready to engage.\r\n\r\nFor many students, this has been their first opportunity to observe a reptile up close, which has sparked curiosity and encouraged questions about animal behavior, habitats, and care. Several students who already own bearded dragons have also shared their experiences, leading to meaningful peer discussions and opportunities for students to connect through shared interests. In addition to these social and emotional benefits, Neil and his enclosure will serve as a valuable instructional resource in future lessons. For example, students will be able to directly reference Neil when learning about desert biomes, reptile adaptations, and animal care. Students know that they have a safe space they can come to for a snack, which for many is the first thing they've eaten that day. Some stop by after school to grab a bag of crackers or nuts to eat at home. One Haitian girl gets a bag of Goldfish for her little brother. Your donation allows for a consistency and stability that may not exist in their life outside of school. \r\n\r\nIt is sometimes over these communions of crackers that students say the most profound or heartbreaking things. Last week two girls were discussing parenting styles over Cheez-Its and one said, \"They say a father is a girl's first love. I don't think so. I think a father is a girl's first heartbreak.\" A different girl on a different day mirrored this quote: \"We think my dad is trying to move out and stealing our stuff for his new place. We had 3 sets of forks and spoons, some cups and plates, and now they're all gone.\"\r\n\r\nI can't undo the actions of irresponsible adults in their lives.
