Students used the *LEGO Ideas International Space Station Building Kit* and the *LEGO 3-in-1 Astronaut set* to collaboratively design and construct models while learning about the structure and purpose of the International Space Station. In one memorable moment, a group of students worked together to recreate different ISS modules and practiced explaining their functions using academic vocabulary, which directly supported their preparation for communicating with astronauts during the ARISS event.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials were first introduced, students were immediately engaged and excited. The hands-on LEGO kits sparked curiosity, teamwork, and problem-solving, while the *Blulu 3D Space Capsule Window Wall Decor* helped transform our school into an immersive space-themed environment leading up to the big day. Students were especially motivated knowing they would be part of a real-world connection with space, and many eagerly asked questions and made meaningful connections between their models and the actual International Space Station.\r\n\r\nThese resources also strengthened our literacy instruction. Students read *The International Space Station (A True Book: Space Exploration)* and *Let's Read: The International Space Station*, building the background knowledge needed to develop thoughtful questions for the ARISS event. They used information from these texts to support discussions, write reflections, and better understand how astronauts live and work in space.\r\n\r\nAs a result of this experience, students were more confident and prepared during the ARISS event, demonstrating strong engagement and a deeper understanding of space science concepts. Looking ahead, students will extend their learning through a project-based experience where they will design their own \"future space station.\" They will incorporate research from the books, apply engineering concepts from their LEGO builds, and present their ideas to peers—continuing to build on the excitement and inspiration sparked by both the donated resources and their unforgettable ARISS experience.","fullyFundedDate":1769177044172,"projectUrl":"project/orbiting-education-lego-models-for-a-re/9792779/","projectTitle":"Orbiting Education: Lego Models for a Real ISS Connection","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Palmeri","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8704310_orig.jpg?crop=1189,1189,x1159,y897&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1769565877725","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8704310"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_59209","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":819,"numTeachers":64,"percentFrplEligible":57,"percentAsian":12,"percentBlack":24,"percentWhite":23,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":32,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"12.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":76.4,"schoolId":59209,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Walnut Grove Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Walnut Grove Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/georgia/gwinnett-county-public-schools/walnut-grove-elementary-school/59209"}
