They can recite the numbers, name the camps, and summarize the timeline. Then they meet Rena and Danka—two sisters only a few years older than they are—and everything shifts. Within days, the statistics they memorized turn into faces, choices, and a promise whispered in the dark: \"I will take care of you.\" I have watched even the most reserved teenagers cry openly when Rena trades her bread, her sleep, her safety—again and again—for her sister's life. That single promise becomes the moral measuring stick they carry for the rest of the year, and, for many of them, for the rest of their lives.\r\nBecause of your donation, my students leave my classroom understanding not just what happened, but what courage actually feels like. They tell me they think of Rena when they see someone being bullied in the hallway and finally find the strength to speak up. They credit her example when they start human rights clubs, organize remembrance events, or choose college majors in law, history, and international relations, with the stated goal of making sure \"never again\" is more than a slogan. Two of my former students are currently studying genocide prevention in graduate school; both wrote their admissions essays about the moment in my class when Rena's story cracked their world open and let the light of moral responsibility in.\r\nRena's Promise does something rare in education: it does not simply inform; it transforms. Year after year, it turns passive teenagers into active witnesses who refuse to look away from injustice—past or present. On behalf of every student who has closed your book with tears in their eyes and fire in their hearts, thank you. Thank you for preserving Rena's voice. Thank you for trusting the world with her story. And thank you for giving my students living proof that even in the worst of circumstances, love and courage can still win.\r\nWith deepest gratitude and admiration,\r\n\r\nHistory Teacher\r\nWakefield Highschool \r\nRaliegh, NC","fullyFundedDate":1756915968173,"projectUrl":"project/holocaust-and-genocide/9439170/","projectTitle":"Holocaust and Genocide","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Head","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10066907"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_1903","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":2046,"numTeachers":104,"percentFrplEligible":40,"percentAsian":4,"percentBlack":27,"percentWhite":45,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":19,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"19.7:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":64.2,"schoolId":1903,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Wakefield High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Wakefield High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/north-carolina/wake-county-public-school-system/wakefield-high-school/1903"}
