Through this novel, students developed important literacy skills such as reading comprehension, vocabulary development, identifying theme, and using context clues to make meaning. While social studies often focuses on learning historical context, this year we intentionally incorporated literacy by selecting a novel that aligned with the historical time period we were studying and connected to a novel students were reading in their ELA class. This helped students deepen their understanding across subjects. \r\nReading in my classroom takes many forms. I read aloud to model fluency and comprehension strategies, students read together to support one another, and they also read independently to build reading stamina and confidence. This balanced approach allowed all learners to engage with the text at their own level.\r\nOverall, the majority of students enjoyed the novel-even reluctant readers. Because the story was engaging and connected to what they were learning, students were more motivated to read and participate in discussions, making reading a more positive and meaningful experience for everyone.","fullyFundedDate":1757970418124,"projectUrl":"project/bringing-literacy-to-a-social-studies-cl/9713118/","projectTitle":"Bringing Literacy to a Social Studies Class","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Davis","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp2915229_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1490400331950","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/davis7ela"},{"teacherId":2915229,"projectId":9316048,"letterContent":"Thank you for donating One Last Word materials for my ELA class. Students were introduced to key literacy skills such as interpreting poetry, analyzing theme, and participating in thoughtful discussions about theme, meaning, and author's purpose. Poetry is a genre many of my students typically dread, but these poems were engaging and accessible, which helped changed their mindset and build confidence. \r\nReading in my class looks collaborative and student-centered. Sometimes we read poems together as a whole class, and other times students work in table groups to discuss language, imagery, and themes before sharing their ideas. These conversations were rich and meaningful, allowing student to learn from one another as well as from the text.\r\nMany students especially enjoyed the new books, particularly my Black students, who felt a strong connection to the voices, experiences, and themes represented in the poems. Seeing themselves reflected in the literature increased their engagement and willingness to participate, making reading a more powerful and personal experience for them.","fullyFundedDate":1746787333542,"projectUrl":"project/bring-the-harlem-renaissance-to-the-clas/9316048/","projectTitle":"Bring the Harlem Renaissance to the Classroom","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Davis","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp2915229_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1490400331950","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/davis7ela"},{"teacherId":8149841,"projectId":9559202,"letterContent":"I wanted to thank you for your generous gift towards my students. In our recent summer-themed art project, my SPED students used the scratch art paper to create vibrant, expressive artwork that highlighted their creativity and individuality. We also began incorporating STEM into art class using the magnetic tiles—students loved building colorful structures, then sketching them from different perspectives to connect engineering and design. And perhaps the most exciting addition has been the 3D printing pen, which we've started using to add dimensional elements to our art pieces. One student created a raised sun and waves for their summer beach scene—it was a proud moment!\r\n\r\nThey were thrilled! The scratch art paper instantly sparked curiosity and joy—many hadn't used anything like it before. When I introduced the magnetic tiles and the 3D printing pen, there was an audible \"Wow!\" in the room. Students were eager to experiment and couldn't wait to get their hands on the new tools. It's been heartwarming to see their excitement turn into focused creativity.\r\n\r\nWhat are the next steps for your students on a current classroom lesson or project?\r\nNext, we're planning a collaborative mural project where students will design and build a 3D \"art-meets-STEM\" cityscape using both the magnetic tiles and paint. They'll work in teams to plan and construct different parts of the city, and then document the process through photography and short written reflections. These new resources have opened up so many possibilities, and I'm excited to continue using them to blend creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration in our art room.","fullyFundedDate":1746617490310,"projectUrl":"project/incorporating-stem-in-art-class/9274326/","projectTitle":"Incorporating STEM in Art Class","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Rossie","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8149841_orig.png?crop=398,398,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1723739695296","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8149841"},{"teacherId":436128,"projectId":9044054,"letterContent":"Dear Donors,\r\n\r\nOn behalf of our entire school community, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you for your generous gift of the Flashforge 3D printer. This incredible tool has truly transformed our library and the way students engage with technology and creativity. Our Innovation Club members have been especially excited to explore the possibilities this printer offers, from designing unique projects to bringing their ideas to life in three dimensions. Your support has made a huge difference in enriching our students' learning experiences.\r\n\r\nThe Innovation Club wasted no time putting the 3D printer to good use. One of their first projects was to create personalized name plates for every teacher's door. The students carefully designed and printed these name plates in both English and Braille, ensuring that our school is more inclusive and welcoming to everyone. Watching the club members collaborate and use new skills in design, problem-solving, and accessibility was inspiring, and it all happened because of the opportunity your donation provided.\r\n\r\nThanks to your kindness, our library has become a hub of innovation and creativity where students can experiment with cutting-edge technology. The Flashforge 3D printer is more than just a machine—it's a bridge to learning, inclusion, and imagination. We are deeply grateful for your support and look forward to many more exciting projects from the Innovation Club that will continue to benefit our entire school community.
