The joy and excitement they show during art experiences has been truly heartwarming.\r\n\r\nThe drying rack has also become such an important part of our classroom. My children carefully place their artwork on the rack each day, knowing their creations are valued and cared for. It has helped create a sense of pride, ownership, and respect for each other's work. I have watched children create elaborate structures, invent stories, test out new ideas, and work collaboratively in ways that have strengthened both their thinking and their friendships.\r\n\r\nThese open-ended materials have truly transformed our classroom environment. Because there is no single \"right way\" to use them, my children feel empowered to take risks, think creatively, and express their own ideas with confidence. I have seen children naturally practice early math, science, communication, and social-emotional skills as they negotiate, revise plans, and celebrate each other's creations. Instead of struggling with messy tape that falls apart, they are now building sturdy, complex structures that actually stay together. Specifically, I ordered copies of Hula, by Jasmine Iolani Hakes, a novel about 3-4 generations of Hawaiian family that learn the importance of family (Ohana) and the cultural significance of the dance. \r\n\r\nI also received 3-4 other titles in various quantities, mostly with the Hawaiian cultural theme, to allow students at various reading levels to choose which novel to concentrate on for quarter 4. Finally, I picked two other selections, one called Ghost and about basketball, to preview for potential class set options for next year.
