My office, which used to look pretty sterile, now has an inviting cozy corner with a carpet, beanbag, fidget toys, books and other resources where students can calm down when they are experiencing big emotions. \r\n My office has always had a table where students would typically sit when referred to my office so now I give them a choice: calming corner or table? Students almost always opt for the calming corner. Recently a boy coming to see me because he was acting out in anger in class, walked in, sat down in the calming corner without any prompting and said, \"Can you turn the lights down? I just need a minute to do some deep breaths.\" He put his hand on his stomach and breathed in deep through his nose as he sat on the beanbag. I was so proud of him as this is something I normally have to walk him through. Many educators use technology everyday, but it is always a struggle to bring its use into the classroom. With your donation, my students have been able to design and create Hawaiian arts and crafts alongside Hawaiian games. \r\n\r\nWe have not yet finished our projects, we are still in the stages of creating. But after the students have completed the arts and crafts and games, they have planned to share them with other students, both younger and older within the Hawaiian Language Immersion Program. The laser engraver, wood pieces, and rotary tools have opened a new world of digital design for my class. \r\n\r\nStudents are not just clicking buttons; they are learning how to create, edit, and refine digital files, then transform those files into physical objects. Editing the digital files has been the biggest learning curve for my students. But they are learning that it is ok to make mistakes, take time to fix their mistakes, and continue until they have reached their goal. This type of learning by blending cultural knowledge and modern-day STEM skills has helped them understand that technology can be a wonderful tool for storytelling, craftsmanship, and bringing to life their creations.\r\n\r\nMahalo again for believing in what our students can do. By integrating art supplies such as card stock, paints, paint trays, and coloring pencils, students were empowered to create heartfelt and personalized gifts for Mother's Day. One part of their Motherʻs Day gift was to create and ensemble a flower out of the card stock, and then paint the card stock the same color of real flower. The students not only thought about their mothers but also learned about the flower that is very popular in Hawaii. This motherʻs day gift not only expressed their creativity but also taught my students how art can express their emotions and appreciation to others. \r\n\r\nAnother smaller project included the students learning how to be good stewards within our small classroom garden. Using the watering cans and the gardening gloves, students fulfilled their responsibilities in watering, cleaning, clearing, pulling weeds, planting seeds, and repotting plants. As the plants became too big for their pots in our small classroom garden, the students continued to use the gardening gloves and a watering can to become active participants in beautifying their school campus environment by learning the importance of responsibility and teamwork through their interactions with nature. These hands-on gardening experiences deepened students' connection to their school environment, strengthening their place-based relationships, their sense of stewardship, and pride in their school.\r\n\r\nProbably the most challenging project out of all the smaller projects was leading the student in an enriching project to create a wearable art. The students created the designs using cutting mats and blades. The designs were made out of vinyl heat transfer materials that were used to create screen print designs frames. Then, we used screen printing ink to customize their t-shirts. Each shirt featured the four unique student-created designs that were created through exploring the designing process by connecting what they have learned to wearable art. Similarly, during Teacher Appreciation Week, students applied the same materials to decorate canvas bags by using their greatly improved writing skills. These projects blended art, literacy, language arts, and technology, giving students a platform to reflect, create, and show appreciation in different and improved ways.\r\n\r\nOverall, the materials that were donated through the \"Improving Through Our Imaginations\" project not only supported a wide range of creative and meaningful activities but also fostered a vibrant, student-centered learning environment. Students built confidence, developed new skills, and found joy in creating tangible products that celebrated their ideas, relationships, and learning journey. Especially creating gifts for those who have greatly support their learning academic journey. Above all small projects, the students favored the projects they were able to give a gift away.
