This was such an upgrade from last semester when my students had to use plastic racquets that often had cracks in the heads of the racquets.\r\n\r\nThis new equipment will benefit Saul students in PE for many years to come. So far, with your help, we've launched our SOPA Y TE project AND gotten some use for those mason jars in the meantime!\r\n\r\nHere's what we've done so far:\r\nWITH THE DEHYDRATOR: Food Science grows mint indoors in our hydroponic system and we've started dehydrating it in batches for our teas. Thankful also to our partner TRUELOVE SEEDS for starting Arabic Mint for us in the greenhouse! Looking forward to planting that soon.\r\n\r\nFOR THE SOUPS: We started bean seeds (lots of different kinds) for our soups!\r\n\r\nWITH THE JARS: It was mapling season at Saul, so we repurposed the mason jars as syrup jars! We were able to make enough syrup this year to have a MAPLE FEST at school, and everyone got to sample our syrup on pancakes AND in sweetened lemonade. We also had MAPLE BINGO, henna/facepaint, a pie your teacher event, and more. Ah, gotta love the seasonal fests!\r\n\r\nIN CLASS: We are JUST STARTING to collect TEA STORIES and SOUP STORIES in different languages for our tea and soup project. Your support has transformed the way we teach and learn about animal care, responsibility, and biology.\r\n\r\n\r\nSince receiving the new enrichment materials, our classroom has come alive with curiosity and hands-on learning. We've set up interactive habitats and observation stations where students can engage directly with our small animals—observing their behaviors, documenting their needs, and developing genuine empathy for living creatures. These moments remind me why experiential learning is so powerful. Our students aren't just reading about animal biology in a textbook—they're living it.\r\n\r\nWhat Happens Next\r\n\r\nBuilding on this foundation, we're planning to expand our project into a full-semester unit on animal welfare and habitat design. Students will research species-specific needs, design and build improved enrichment structures, and present their findings to the class. We're also exploring a community partnership where students can share what they've learned with younger grade levels, reinforcing their own understanding while inspiring the next generation of animal advocates.\r\n\r\nYour investment didn't just provide materials—it created a bridge between abstract concepts and real-world responsibility. Your support has sparked genuine excitement in our 12th-grade classroom and opened doors to real-world learning we couldn't have created otherwise. When we introduced the idea of making melt-and-pour soap with cow's milk to sell at our country fair, our students' eyes lit up—they suddenly understood that chemistry isn't just something that happens in a textbook; it's something they can create, refine, and share with their community. Watching them discover the properties of milk in soap, experiment with scents and colors, and take ownership of their products has been truly inspiring.\r\nOur students are now fully immersed in both the craft and the business side of this project. They're learning about profit margins, packaging design, and customer appeal—skills that will serve them far beyond this classroom. More importantly, they're developing entrepreneurial confidence and seeing themselves as capable of creating something valuable. The energy in the room has shifted; students who are typically quiet have stepped up to lead, and those who struggle with traditional chemistry concepts have found a hands-on way to understand the science behind their creations.\r\nThe best part? The profits from our country fair sales will directly support our small animal lab, meaning your donation creates a ripple effect throughout our entire program. Your generosity isn't just funding a fun project—it's teaching our students about responsibility, sustainable business practices, and giving back to the school community. We can't wait to share our homemade soaps at the fair and watch our students beam with pride as they talk to customers about what they've created. That first strike out is an empowering feeling and students learn the reward of discipline and hard work.\r\n\r\nMore importantly I have also used this to help my players to understand the importance of attendance and maintaining their grades. Developing close relationships with teens allows you to have a greater impact because they are more inclined to listen to your words of wisdom and encouragement. Students are practicing proper feeding, safe handling, and habitat maintenance routines they'll need for careers in veterinary science, animal husbandry, and agricultural education.\r\nProject-based learning: We recently completed a week-long \"Health Check & Habitat Improvement\" project. Students performed routine health exams, recorded observations, and then designed and implemented habitat upgrades using the new materials. They created checklists, practiced restraint techniques, and documented before-and-after results for each animal's enclosure.\r\nCareer and leadership experiences: FFA members are using the closet to keep project materials organized for judging preparation and community outreach events. The availability of professional tools has helped students take on leadership roles — mentoring peers, running station rotations, and supervising volunteer time.\r\nA moment that mattered When we first opened the FFA closet and brought the new supplies into the lab, the students' reactions were immediate — excited, proud, and deeply engaged. One student who's been hesitant to work with animals stepped forward to lead a complete health check because the proper gloves and restraint tools helped them feel safe and confident. Seeing that student calmly hold and assess a guinea pig for the first time was a highlight for the whole class; several students said afterward that they felt more prepared to consider animal-care careers.","fullyFundedDate":1755705504994,"projectUrl":"project/ms-cullens-small-animal-science-class/9433795/","projectTitle":"Ms. Cullen's Small Animal Science Class/FFA Closet","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Cullen","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9827927_orig.jpg?crop=1557,1557,x0,y436&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1738641371865","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9827927"},{"teacherId":9827927,"projectId":9097189,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous donation of biohazard containers, shovels, and other items.
