The story connects to our life science unit because we studied owls by dissecting owl pellets and learning about the food chain. Since owls are predators of rats and mice, the book helped us understand how these animals survive in nature.\r\n\r\nThe novel also improved our reading comprehension. We practiced understanding the characters, identifying the main idea, making predictions, and finding evidence from the text.\r\n\r\nAfter finishing the book, we watched the movie and compared the two versions using a Venn diagram. This story, written in poetry form, really allowed my students to dive deeply into the world figurative language while telling a story. My students worked hard on identifying elements such as similes, metaphors, hyperbole, personification and onomatopoeia. \r\n\r\nIn addition to studying the figurative language elements of the story, my students also loved learning that this book was loosely based on real Otters from the Monterey Bay aquarium. Many of my students made a personal connection to the story because many of them have visited the Aquarium as it is just a couple hours from us. The 3D printer has already made a huge impact on my students and the other students in my school. Students were so excited to begin the school year off with a project they designed and were able to print. Now that we have a faster and more efficient printer, more students have been able to get their projects printed.\r\n\r\nAll 90 sixth grade students have learned how to design on 3D software. We took this knowledge and applied it to our unit on plant an animal cells. With partners they have been able to show their understanding of cells through 3D design and printing. This has been both educational and highly engaging.
