We are currently in chapter 7 of the book (out of 12) and the kids have been extremely engaged! Typically, with each chapter I like to change how we read - sometimes as a whole class, with a partner, individually, or popcorn reading! What surprises me the most, and also is an indication that the kids are enjoying the book, is how SILENT they are during individual reading time! I can count on one hand how many times a student has fallen asleep during reading time (it might even be zero? But I do not want to jinx it, haha), and that says something. \r\n\r\nInitially, the kids were excited to read this book. They saw the cover, saw that it was 125 pages, and were eager to get started. I also introduced it to them by giving some background info, and I knew almost immediately the kids would be able to relate and see traces of their own experiences in the book which is important when planning engaging content!\r\n\r\nThe next steps will be to wrap up the book and connect it to what is happening in our society today. Perhaps I will even encourage them to read the next book in the trilogy! \r\n\r\nAgain, thank you so much for donating to contribute to our first class set of books.","fullyFundedDate":1737139909664,"projectUrl":"project/teaching-heritage-speakers-spanish-throu/9040397/","projectTitle":"Teaching Heritage Speakers Spanish Through Literacy!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Tori","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9239186"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_72561","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":255,"numTeachers":14,"percentFrplEligible":74,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":6,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":93,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"18.2:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":71.8,"schoolId":72561,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Veritas High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Veritas High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/wisconsin/wisconsin-department-of-public-institute/veritas-high-school/72561"}
