This work has been co-led by Ms. Karen (Occupational Therapist/OT) and our Speech-Language Pathologist/SLP.\r\n\r\nInteroception is our ability to notice and understand the signals our body sends us. Just like we use our five senses (sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell) to understand the world around us, interoception helps us understand what's happening inside our bodies. This includes recognizing when we feel hungry, tired, hot, cold, need to use the bathroom, or have big emotions like excitement or nervousness.\r\n\r\nLearning to recognize and name body signals helps our students:\r\n-Communicate their needs (\"I feel hungry\" or \"I'm upset, I need a squeeze\")\r\n-Develop self-regulation skills and manage big emotions\r\n-Build body awareness and safety (knowing when something doesn't feel right)\r\n-Connect their physical feelings to their emotional experiences\r\n\r\nWe have explored our whole body and talked about what things our body liked and did not like. Throughout the year, we have built our own individualized \"feel-good menus\" - a list of items that help our bodies feel \"just right\" when we're sad, upset, tired, or too excited. Each student selected tools that they felt helped their body feel calm, regulated, and ready to learn. We have learned about how we might use our feel good menus when we feel tired, upset, frustrated, sad, excited, or wiggly! The students also got to take home a \"feel good book\" that has sticker sheets from all our experiments where they used the stickers to mark if they liked something or didn't like something.
