As soon as I started the setup, my students noticed and they gravitated towards all the neat things you helped provide for them. I'm happy to report that they've been great about respecting the space and using it appropriately. \r\n\r\nI plan to use the calming corner for students who are visibly anxious or down. In the past, I've had students ask to step outside or go see their counselor. This provides an additional option for students who may just need a moment to calm down or decompress. I also plan on having a catchup Friday once a month for students who need additional time to complete missing assignments. Students who are caught up with all their work will be able to play games or enjoy the calming corner to relax with a couple of friends. \r\n\r\nI am extremely excited about this project and I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping me put it together. This was my first time putting a project on donors choose and with the need to get the garden bed prepared for planting being on a tight time frame, I made the choice to buy a bulk set of cheap gloves my students could use. On the first day we went out to pull the weeds a lot of students were participating, but I heard over and over again \"miss, these gloves hurt\", \"miss, these gloves don't let me bend my fingers\", \"miss, these gloves are too big!\". You can actually see the \"stiff and painful\" gloves that I originally purchased in the first couple of photos I posted. \r\n\r\nHowever, to my shock and amazement, one month after posting the project you all helped get it fully funded and within a week or two a box of soft, durable, flexible, and longer therefore more protective gloves showed up in my classroom. That day I could not contain my excitement and when I enthusiastically told my students about the donations, they were confused and yet thrilled that some \"random strangers wanted to get us better gardening gloves.\" \r\n\r\nOver the next week or two (in December) we went out and did several rounds of transplanting the seedlings out into the garden bed using the new gloves you all so kindly provided. Several students commented \"these gloves are so much better! I can actually move my fingers\" which was so gratifying to hear. However, while not every student was so clearly vocal about how much of a difference the new gloves made, their praise was evident in the words they did NOT say. In those 2 planting sessions I heard ZERO students complain about their fingers hurting or the gloves being the wrong size and the students were MUCH more willing to participate. Clearly, having the right tools for the job makes the job much more enjoyable. \r\n\r\nInterestingly, when their focus was no longer on the bad gloves, the conversations I heard shifted to focusing on noticing their surroundings, making observations about what they were finding, and asking really good questions. I try so hard in the classroom to get them to be curious, but out there in the garden their natural curiosity started coming out with no effort or prodding on my part at all! They wanted to know why the weeds were so good at choking out the other plants, why the grubs in the ground seemed to be in different stages of development, how plants reproduce themselves, and what effect the bits of plastic we kept finding in the ground might have on the plant and animal life. They were SO ENGAGED and it was beautiful. \r\n\r\nWe are currently working on understanding the effect of water pollution on plant and animal life and the role of soil in filtering and cleaning the water we drink. Soon we will be going out to the garden to dig up some different types of soil and do our own filtration experiments, with the help of the gloves you provided of course! We will also be planting our spring/summer plants soon and the students and I couldn't be more excited. \r\n\r\nThank you for the joy, the sunshine, and the curiosity you have enabled me to bring to my class this year and in future years. Your contribution truly is making a lasting difference.","fullyFundedDate":1733289471287,"projectUrl":"project/growing-a-better-world-gardening-and/8941547/","projectTitle":"\"Growing\" a Better World (Gardening and Environmental Science)","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Burhans","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9835106_orig.jpg?crop=2298,2298,x725,y372&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1739577094463","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9835106"},{"teacherId":9490627,"projectId":8883233,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your donation to this project. Student final projects are now on display in our 'historical artifact' cabinet. This is super impactful as students that went above and beyond in their work are now honored for their work in class. Students also have a clean classroom that allows them to be comfortable in their second home. Students use the disinfectant wipes almost daily and love to take care of the room in his way. We have gone through 1/3 of our pencils already, as students with no supplies or backpacks now have the resources in class to be able to complete their work and focus on learning. Lastly, we have used the class set of scissors to complete their latest project, Who I Am, where they use magazines to fill in a silhouette of themselves. These projects are now posted all round the class and have unique shadows of each individual student where they show who they are and what lies in the future ahead of them. With these resources, students have been able to complete their work and focus on learning, in a very simple manner, as they have all the resources to need to be comfortable in the classroom, allowing them to learn! When my students first saw the materials they were in awe. They were so surprised and thankful that they were chosen for these resources and immediately helped me put them somewhere in the classroom for them to use. With these new awesome resources, my students are going to continue to learn and create meaningful projects that display their talents and portray a little bit of themselves as a reflection from the curriculum.
