We finished Blood on the River with the whole class last week and I was blown away by the impact it had on the students. Not only did it relate directly to the curriculum we were learning about and projects we were creating, but it was also a very engaging story for the students. Our students were recently on a field trip to the Star of India, where they had the opportunity to live like sailors, sleep on the ship, raise sails, go in the tween deck, load a runner gun, etc. This book mentioned many of those activities, and the students were able to make real life connections which is always important for learning readers. \r\nThis opportunity was only possible because of donors like yourself. Because of you, our students now have access to a full set of core literature books and flexible seating options that are truly transforming how we read and learn together.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is no longer just an individual task—it's a shared experience. With each student holding their own copy of the book, we're able to dive into stories together in real time. We stop to ask questions, make predictions, highlight powerful quotes, and connect emotionally with characters. These books have introduced key reading and thinking skills like analyzing character development, identifying literary themes, understanding symbolism, and supporting opinions with textual evidence. Students are learning not just what happens in a story, but why it matters.\r\n\r\nThe flexible seating has made a surprising difference too! Students are more focused, engaged, and comfortable. Whether it's a wobble stool, a floor cushion, or a standing desk, each student can choose what helps them concentrate best. Reading has become something they look forward to—something they can settle into and enjoy.\r\n\r\nOne student who has really blossomed with these new books. He used to be reluctant to read out loud or participate, but after we started our new class novel, he found a character he related to—and now he raises his hand to share insights almost every day. Another student, has found her voice in writing thoughtful responses during our literature circles, which we hold around a cozy corner thanks to the new flexible seating.\r\n\r\nYour gift has made reading more inclusive, more meaningful, and more enjoyable for all of us.
