The social studies texts help students build background knowledge, practice identifying main ideas, and make connections between historical events and the world around them. Separately, we also read the novel Holes as a class read-aloud, which allowed students to explore literary elements such as character development, theme, and plot structure. Although these texts were taught independently, both supported essential reading skills in different ways.\r\n\r\nBook clubs play an important role in this process. Small-group reading gives students the support they need to engage with longer chapter books they might not choose on their own. During discussions, students practice using text evidence, collaborate with peers, and gain confidence as they share ideas. Our read-aloud of Holes was especially successful, as many students enjoyed trying a genre outside their usual comfort zone while deeply studying how characters change over time.\r\n\r\nTogether, these instructional approaches—book clubs, social studies texts, and the class novel Holes—give students a balanced literacy experience. Students grow comfortable with complex texts, strengthen comprehension strategies, and develop a stronger reading identity. This structure helps students become more confident and capable readers across subjects.","fullyFundedDate":1760757822573,"projectUrl":"project/pages-with-a-purpose-voices-of-history/9496902/","projectTitle":"Pages with a Purpose, Voices of History","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Spicer","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3083695"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_64615","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":717,"numTeachers":45,"percentFrplEligible":23,"percentAsian":23,"percentBlack":10,"percentWhite":40,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":17,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":8,"gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"15.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":83.5,"schoolId":64615,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Urbana Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Urbana Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/maryland/frederick-county-public-school-district/urbana-elementary-school/64615"}
