When the students first saw the new cabin, bean bag chair, and the organized activity bins, their eyes widened with genuine surprise and joy. There was an immediate rush of whispers and excitement as they explored the space; it wasn't just a place to store books anymore, but a destination they were eager to visit. Seeing their faces light up made it clear that having a dedicated, comfortable environment changes their entire perspective on reading time.\r\n\r\nOne specific moment that stands out involved a student who typically finds it difficult to sit still during independent reading. The second they sat in the new bean bag chair with a book, they seemed to instantly settle in. Within minutes, they were completely tucked away inside the cabin, totally immersed in their story and shielded from the usual classroom distractions. It has become a peaceful \"focus zone\" where students feel safe and inspired to get lost in a good book, and the long organizers have made it so much easier for them to transition into their literacy activities without any frustration.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, our scholars are diving deeper into our current unit on comparing points of view. We plan to use the reading corner as a collaborative hub where students can grab materials from the new activity bins and work in pairs to analyze how different characters experience the same story. The cabin will also serve as a special \"reflection nook\" where students can prepare short book reviews to share with their classmates. These new resources aren't just furniture; they are active tools that are helping our 3rd graders become more organized, focused, and passionate readers every single day.","fullyFundedDate":1770647673641,"projectUrl":"project/reading-corner/10077085/","projectTitle":"Reading Corner","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Santos","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10426251_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1769984297235","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10426251"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_97473","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":540,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":91,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":0,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":98,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":0,"gradesServed":"K - 8","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":57.3,"schoolId":97473,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Acero Charter School - Omar Torres Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Acero Charter School - Omar Torres Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/illinois/chicago-public-school-district-299/uno-pfc-omar-e-torres-cs/97473"}
