Academic Support and Improved Outcomes:\r\nThe Center is designed to offer a quiet, resource-rich environment where students can focus, complete classwork, or receive individualized academic support. Access to tools like headphones for online coursework, comfortable seating, and snacks will help reduce distractions and improve concentration. As a result, students are more likely to stay on task, complete assignments, and improve their grades.\r\n\r\n2. Decreased Behavioral Incidents:\r\nBy offering a safe space for students to decompress, practice mindfulness, and self-regulate, the Youth Advocate Center proactively addresses behavior before it escalates. The ability to take a break, engage with calming sensory items (like LED lights, aromatherapy, or music), and return to class with a reset mindset can directly reduce the number of behavior referrals and suspensions.\r\n\r\n3. Social-Emotional Growth and Engagement:\r\nMotivational posters, access to positive reading materials, and a consistent adult presence will encourage students to develop a growth mindset and build resilience. Emotional support and community-building efforts in the Center can enhance students' confidence, empathy, and relationships with staff and peers.\r\n\r\n4. Positive School Culture and Incentivized Attendance:\r\nThe structured reward system—such as the opportunity to win Apple AirPods—adds an element of positive reinforcement that encourages consistent attendance, hard work, and regular use of the space. This promotes a school-wide message: student effort and well-being are noticed, valued, and celebrated.\r\n\r\n5. Long-Term Student Impact:\r\nBy investing in a student-centered space now, we lay the foundation for long-term success. Students who feel supported—both emotionally and academically—are more likely to stay engaged in school, graduate, and develop the skills needed for success beyond the classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1727712134199,"projectUrl":"project/redhawk-safe-space/8600853/","projectTitle":"Redhawk Safe Space","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Dix","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7818880_orig.png?crop=542,542,x102,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1723732815332","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7818880"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_69935","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":881,"numTeachers":62,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":33,"percentWhite":8,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":49,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"14.2:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":70.1,"schoolId":69935,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Union High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Union High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/michigan/grand-rapids-public-school-district/union-high-school-comprehensive/69935"}
