I teach in a rural high school and our classroom budgets are slim. As a rancher's daughter, I learned to stretch a dollar, but that often meant that the \"luxuries\" and \"fun things\" were not available. \r\nBut not that day!\r\nI decided to open the boxes right then. I had ordered the items months before and did not know what would be in each box, so it was fun for me as well! Now, sometimes teenagers get a bad rap for being jaded or \"too cool\" for fun, but that was not my experience that day. The students immediately wanted to open up the Social Emotional learning supplies right then. They divided the different \"bubble\" heads among the tables and started using them as we discussed the characters in our story. They were analyzing the colors and texture choices in the bubble heads and matching them to the tone choices in the story we were reading. \r\nThe Play-Doh I kept for a specific lesson plan with my AP English students during a poetry unit where students had to create an \"abstract\" representation of an emotion to show how visually similar it can be to poets creating a tangible product-the poem-to tackle the abstract parts of the human experience. The organic conversations in the small groups had the spark of childhood joy because of the Play-Doh, but the depth of the connections reflected their college level learning. \r\n\r\nThe other supplies will be used next week when we introduce our last long work that we will study before the AP exam. I will be hosting a \"Tea Party\" in the character and setting of the play The Importance of Being Earnest. Costume design and character development, along with the hands on learning, create a memorable learning environment. While students discuss the themes of the play, they sip tea and manifest their assigned character in the conversations. \r\nIt is delightful indeed! The experience brings such depth in their analysis.\r\nI am grateful that these moments of joy can help my students with their social emotional health while increasing their memorable analysis!","fullyFundedDate":1766184907458,"projectUrl":"project/usbe-ai-for-k12-education-with-social/9633575/","projectTitle":"USBE AI for K–12 Education with Social Emotional Support","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Birchell","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8277260_orig.jpg?crop=2937,2938,x0,y332&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1642542891995","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8277260"},{"teacherId":8288531,"projectId":9621214,"letterContent":"My students are using these novels in small-group literature circles. I let students choose the novels they want to read with a group. These books have added current titles to the list of books students can choose from. Before this project was funded, most of the books that I had to choose from were science fiction, with only a few fantasy novels. Most of those novels were published well over 15 years ago. Now, students have current books and a more balanced variety to choose from.\r\n\r\nThese books are also used for options for their independent reading project. Each student chooses a novel to read independently, and many of them choose one of these books. Student choice is a valuable tool to encourage independent reading.","fullyFundedDate":1756606341636,"projectUrl":"project/usbe-ai-for-k12-education-class-novel-s/9621214/","projectTitle":"USBE AI for K–12 Education Class Novel Sets","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Harvey","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8288531"},{"teacherId":8280534,"projectId":9618712,"letterContent":"It has been a great fall trimester. Having supplies topped up helped see us through.\r\n\r\nStudents in STEM have been treated well with safety gear stocked and ready, band aids also on hand as occasionally needed. Students have been focused with only school computers, avoiding the distraction of personal device usage. Lemonade was a hit in the after school program and will add to our goodbye day in each class.
