Many student have been introduced to the space and were wowed by the collection of fun activities to get to enjoy. So far the Lego and drones have been of most interest. \r\n\r\nThe space has not been used to it's full potential yet as my behavior team and I are still figuring out the best system. One counselor used it recently to run a group with 7th graders on communication. While playing with Lego, the students had to use communication skills to share about what they were working on and to ask someone else about their project. Two students have requested to be in the group again to check out more of the activities. \r\n\r\nThe other way the room has been used is for rewards. Students with frequent behaviors have been placed on a check-in check-out system with a chance to earn a reward at the end of every day and a bigger reward at the end of every week. One student asked to go to the room to play with the drones and is looking forward to setting up a course once they feel comfortable working the drone. \r\n\r\nAs a team, we are still working on how to make this space as awesome and functional as possible. Each of our counselors is coming up with ways to integrate the materials into their groups and have started to offer \"Friday free time\" as a reward for an awesome week. Thank you again for your support in providing unique materials for our students to learn and grow in different ways.","fullyFundedDate":1733267756833,"projectUrl":"project/providing-steam-enrichment-activities-fo/8682286/","projectTitle":"Providing STEAM Enrichment Activities for Middle Schoolers","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Sommarstrom","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6884525_orig.jpg?crop=1073,1073,x0,y193&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1571348318065","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6884525"},{"teacherId":2109238,"projectId":8919923,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generous donations, our classroom reading corner has transformed the way our students engage with books. The cozy, welcoming space filled with age-appropriate and visually appealing books has sparked a newfound excitement for reading among our students.\r\n\r\nMany of our struggling readers have never experienced the joy of finishing a book on their own before. With the addition of graphic novels and high-interest books at various reading levels, students are now discovering stories that capture their imagination. These books are not only accessible but also help build essential reading skills such as comprehension, vocabulary, and sequencing.\r\n\r\nOne of the most heartwarming changes we've seen is the confidence blossoming in our students. For example, Maria, who once hesitated to pick up a book, now eagerly spends time in the reading corner exploring graphic novels. She recently finished her first book independently and couldn't wait to share the story with her classmates. Similarly, Jason, who struggled with reading fluency, has found a passion for books about animals, flipping through colorful pages and practicing his reading aloud.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom now feels like an adventure rather than a chore. Students are not only learning to read but also developing a love for stories that will stay with them for years to come. Your support has made this possible, and we are incredibly grateful for your kindness and belief in our students' potential.","fullyFundedDate":1733268239406,"projectUrl":"project/take-a-look-its-in-a-book/8919923/","projectTitle":"Take A Look It's In a Book!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Foster","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp2109238_orig.png?crop=400,400,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1640757718146","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mpetersen"},{"teacherId":6884525,"projectId":8656178,"letterContent":"Thank you again for your generous support for this project. The purchased items have turned a corner of a classroom into a wonderful calm space for students to take a break and get back into the learning zone. \r\nWe held a grand opening and invited student to come and see what the space was about and how they could use it. For some, it is asking for a break. For others, it is when they give a non-verbal signal that they are not ok. \r\nSo far, two students have used the space multiple times. One had a rough interaction with a peer and needed time to calm down. They enjoyed using the sand tray while watching the jelly fish move around in the tube. The other student shared that he did not get enough sleep which is a known trigger leading to outbursts. He was given the opportunity to take a nap in the bean bag chair and used the sound machine at the same time. \r\nAs a school, we look forward to the continued use of this space to allow our students to self-regulate and learn good habits for calming down. Thank you again for your generosity in making this dream a reality.","fullyFundedDate":1731258933941,"projectUrl":"project/mental-health-break-room-for-middle-scho/8656178/","projectTitle":"Mental Health Break Room for Middle Schoolers","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Sommarstrom","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6884525_orig.jpg?crop=1073,1073,x0,y193&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1571348318065","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6884525"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_36833","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":757,"numTeachers":41,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":1,"percentIndigenous":8,"percentLatinx":88,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"18.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":67.1,"schoolId":36833,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Toppenish Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Toppenish Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/washington/toppenish-school-district/toppenish-middle-school/36833"}
