I knew most of my students had never stepped foot in a bowling alley, let alone a military base. I also know my students, noise, bright lights, & too much activity happening at once can quickly spiral into anxiety and unexpected behaviors. When we walked through those doors, the common area was packed wall to wall with men & women in uniform, some in dress blues, others in suits & ties. Unknown to us, they were in the middle of an honor ceremony. My stomach dropped. But before I could even think of what to do, a gentleman in combat boots & another in full dress uniform quietly bent down & addressed my students one by one, eye to eye. My kids stood up straight. They were smiling. Every bit of uncertainty I walked in with, disappeared in that moment. Those first few moments alone were worth every permission slip, every early morning, and every dollar donated to make this trip happen.\r\n\r\nThe snacks y'all funded were doing important work all day long. Between activities, when the new sights & sounds started to feel like a lot, we'd gather our group & pass out snacks. For my students, that calm moment in the middle of such a big day is not a break from learning, it is learning. Regulating emotions, communicating needs, sitting together & sharing something familiar are all skills we work on every single day in our classroom & your donation gave us the perfect real-world setting to practice them.\r\n\r\nBack home in Tok, the memories haven't faded one bit. My students are still talking about Fort Greely, bowling, the pool, and the soldiers who stopped to say hello.
