Students enrolled in Explore Foods classes partnered with students in Explore Marketing to investigate career pathways beyond traditional food service—especially careers not commonly visible in a small, rural Montana community. The project centered on four Zoom career exploration sessions with industry professionals from across the country. The first session featured a technical writer from\r\nBobcat, who discussed technical documentation, safety communication, and writing for industry. The second meeting was with a marketing specialist from Ken Cook Marketing Company, who introduced students to marketing strategy, branding, and professional publishing software. The third session connected students with a food photographer and cookbook author from Wisconsin, highlighting careers in food media, photography, and publishing. The final Zoom featured a marketing executive from Rodelle Vanilla, who shared insights into product marketing, food production, and brand development.\r\nThroughout the project, students applied their learning directly to the creation of a student-designed cookbook. Explore Foods students typed, tested, and evaluated recipes; prepared featured dishes; and photographed finished products for inclusion. Many of the ingredients used in the cookbook were grown in the school garden, which students helped design, plant, and maintain. This experience reinforced sustainability, farm-to-table concepts, and food systems while also incorporating learning about Native American gardening techniques and traditional food choices connected to the region. Students practiced culinary demonstration skills by preparing short cooking segments for Wolves Live, the school's weekly news show. Explore Marketing students focused on recipe formatting, layout design, and writing safety warnings modeled after equipment owner's manuals, strengthening technical writing skills while reinforcing food safety, risk awareness, and hazard identification. Additional life and workplace skills were embedded into the project. Students practiced accurately counting and making change using simulated cash systems before working in the school concession stand, reinforcing financial literacy, responsibility, and customer service skills transferable to many careers. Key partnerships enhanced the project's impact. Students collaborated with the high school Digital Literacy class to record and edit cooking demonstrations for Wolves Live. Ken Cook Marketing Company partnered with the program to publish the cookbook using professional manual-design software, and the finished cookbook will be used as a trade show giveaway to demonstrate the platform's capabilities. Utilizing the graph paper to sketch, measure and construct a 'blue print' for the construction and testing phases was critical. Additionally, a group of students have been utlizing Light Burn and with a small table-top laser engraver to produce laser-burned business logos on wood rounds for display outside of a space that has been funded by the donations and efforts of those organizations (including Donors Choose!!). The graphing material gives and gives!\r\n\r\nInside of our Marketing classes, of which whom process in-house print shop orders, posters have been created for both customers and for improving the efficiency of the student operated business. Media printed from an oversized plotter printer is trimmed with the healing mat and safety ruler, resulting in a game-changing, higher-quality finished product. \r\n\r\nIn the middle school tech courses, a recent project learning the ins-and-outs of Google Sheets was made so much better because of the class set of mice. Having a 'right click' option when learning the power of spreadsheets, to access various functions', let students know right away how powerful they could be. The mice continue to serve with the Desktop Publishing and Media Production classes, as they learn industry-standard applications in preparation for entering the work force. \r\n\r\nThank you cards are written very frequently in the classroom. A Middle School Career Connections inter-curricular project connects students with industry professionals around the United States for collaborative and eye-opening interviews. Students are made aware of careers that maybe didn't exist years ago, visit with professionals and learn about opportunities that evolve. Every interviewee is sent a thank you, from every participating student.\r\n\r\nThank you all so much for the excitement these small, but mighty, pieces of equipment have become in our district. Through planting seed starts, monitoring plant growth, and preparing beds for spring planting, students are actively engaged in understanding how soil health, water use, sunlight, and nutrients influence the quality of the food we grow and eat. Even during colder months, learning continues as students document plant development, track water usage, and study nutrient inputs through journals and data collection, reinforcing science, literacy, and critical-thinking skills.\r\nOur new garden beds will be added to the six raised garden beds we currently maintain. These beds support PreK–12 instruction by serving as an extension of Family and Consumer Sciences classrooms and science labs. Students connect plant science to food preparation, nutrition, and healthy living while gaining a deeper appreciation for where food comes from. The garden also functions as a shared space for reflection, collaboration, and well-being, offering students a sense of purpose as they work together to grow food for others.\r\nThe watering system will provide the garden with adequate water for each area of the garden while conserving as much water as possible. The garden expansion will allow for increased crop varieties and yield, strengthening farm-to-school connections. Through hands-on practice with change boxes stocked with pretend bills and coins, students learned how to accurately calculate totals, determine the correct amount of change, and confidently count change back to a customer.\r\n\r\nStudents worked through realistic fundraising scenarios, such as selling popcorn and concessions at home sporting events, rotating roles as both the cashier and the customer. As the checker, students practiced counting change out loud while returning money to the customer—reinforcing accuracy, organization, and clear communication. As the customer, students learned to listen carefully and verify that the correct amount of change was returned, helping them recognize and correct errors when they occur.\r\n\r\nThis dual-role approach strengthened students' understanding of money management from both perspectives and increased their confidence in handling cash transactions. Many students expressed greater readiness to participate in school fundraisers and future work experiences where cash handling is required. With the heavy-duty wagon, industrial scale, and thank-you cards funded through this project, our students were able to gather, weigh, and deliver nearly 2,000 pounds of food to the local food bank—just in time for Thanksgiving.\r\n\r\nThese tools transformed our food drive into a hands-on, student-led experience. The wagon made it manageable to collect and transport large donations, and the industrial scale helped students track progress in real time, motivating them to push toward bigger goals. The thank-you cards gave students the opportunity to reflect on gratitude and practice writing meaningful, professional messages to the community members who contributed.\r\n\r\nBecause of your support, students learned the power of teamwork, leadership, and service—and saw firsthand how their actions can positively impact families in our community. This project helped them recognize that they have the ability to create change and support others in meaningful ways. Because of your support, over 60 Algebra students were able to participate in an engaging, hands-on STEM activity to wrap up the school year.\r\n\r\nIn this activity, students measured Barbie's average drop distance using 2 to 10 rubber bands. They organized their data into charts and plotted each result on a scatter plot. Energy was high as partners took turns being the \"launcher\" and the \"measurer\" for each of Barbie's experimental jumps!\r\n\r\nThen came the real excitement, as well as some healthy competition: the Challenge Jump! Each team was tasked with using their scatterplots and linear equations to figure out how many rubber bands would be needed to help Barbie safely make a daring 400 cm jump from the top of the bleachers. The results were thrilling, with one winning team getting so close that Barbie's ponytail just brushed the ground!\r\n\r\nThis project made a lasting impression on our students here in Three Forks. They not only had a blast, but also developed valuable skills in data collection, analysis, and applying linear models to real-life situations. Even now, just four weeks into the new school year, several of my current Algebra students are already buzzing with excitement for their chance to do the Barbie Bungee Jump.\r\n\r\nOnce again, thank you.
