With the funding you provided, we were able to purchase important materials and resources to help our students succeed. \r\n\r\nWhile Social-Emotional Learning is somewhat of a new buzzword in education, the impact of its implementation is incredible. The Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) resources and materials that we purchased are playing a crucial role in helping our students develop the skills needed for success in both their academic and personal lives. By providing tools that teach emotional regulation, empathy, communication, and problem-solving, these SEL resources are helping our teenagers build strong interpersonal relationships, manage stress, and navigate challenges with resilience. These materials foster a deeper understanding of self-awareness and self-management, which are essential for making thoughtful decisions and achieving long-term goals. With SEL, students can enhance their emotional intelligence, which not only supports their academic success but also lays a foundation for future personal and professional growth. By integrating SEL into everyday life, our students are better equipped to handle the complexities of adolescence and transition into adulthood with confidence and emotional stability.","fullyFundedDate":1724349396282,"projectUrl":"project/mental-health-and-sel-supports-through-l/8681416/","projectTitle":"Mental Health and SEL Supports Through Leadership Class!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Riley O'Rourke","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9232455"},{"teacherId":9635184,"projectId":8587560,"letterContent":"Promoting a desire to read has been a goal of mine as an educator for the past three years. The Chromebook chargers ensure that our students have the technology they need to stay connected and engaged with their lessons, while the translation device will help bridge language barriers and support clearer communication in the classroom. The phone station helps the students have a place to store their phone and not be a distraction.\r\n\r\nThe board game also provides an excellent opportunity for students to practice language skills in a fun, interactive way, fostering stronger social connections and building confidence. Additionally, the flexible seating will allow students to choose a comfortable learning space, promoting a more inclusive and adaptable classroom environment. With your help my students have been able to get more involved in our classwork and interact more with one another during our discussions. The materials donated have been used in two different grade levels for different projects. \r\n\r\nMy seniors needed the pencils, pens, and post-it notes. The project they were working on was delving into the symbolism, imagery and characterization in Toni Morrison's work. They had the option of either working with the physical text or with the online text my district had provided. With the exception of two out of 72 students, they opted for the book and the notes. They were able to annotate the text as we read the novel. It was gratifying to see and hear the higher level of engagement during our class discussions thanks to these notes. They were able to locate passages with greater ease and refer to their own notes. My senior class in particular were delighted and grateful to see the supplies as it was very much needed. \r\n\r\nMy junior class has more language learners, and reluctant learners. In general, they struggle engaging with one another in class discussion, a tool that has been invaluable for analyzing literature. To help them get over their shyness I had them create a mandala (a visual aid) to enable them to get to know one another. The mandala's represent their hopes, fears, favorite hobbies, goals, etc. The effect has been some bonding on similar passions (soccer being one). This love of the game has now created some friendships and comraderies that was lacking in the beginning of the semester. Through this the academic discussions about literature are more dynamic as they feel more comfortable taking risks when talking about imagery or symbolism within a text. They were also very pleased, if not surprised, to see new material and not a \"hand me down\" per se. Students are quick to note a lack of resources, or used resources, and were thrilled to have the proper supplies for an assignment. \r\n\r\nMy next project with them in the new year will be to apply these visual learning skills to poetry in January. We will be working with the works of Byron and Warsan Shire in the coming year. I will be using these materials again to have my juniors annotate the texts with color and notations so they can have a better appreciation of the art of poetry.\r\nI am very grateful for your support in giving my students these opportunities.","fullyFundedDate":1727462601486,"projectUrl":"project/annotating-and-visual-literacy/8576908/","projectTitle":"Annotating and Visual Literacy","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Connolly","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8973019"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_41249","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1439,"numTeachers":89,"percentFrplEligible":81,"percentAsian":7,"percentBlack":2,"percentWhite":15,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":71,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"16.2:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":37.6,"schoolId":41249,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Thornton High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Thornton High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/colorado/adams-12-five-star-schools/thornton-high-school/41249"}
