When the boxes of masks and scoring systems finally arrived, the students didn't just see sports gear, they saw a specialized laboratory being built just for them. Their faces lit up with a mix of awe and immediate curiosity; seeing the scoring boxes light up for the first time made the sport feel \"real\" in a way it never had before. For many of my students at Thomas Jefferson, this was their first time interacting with the sophisticated technology that defines modern fencing. One student, upon seeing the precision of the scoring lights and the protective mesh of the masks, remarked that we finally look like the \"elite programs\" they see on TV.\r\n\r\nWe are currently using these resources to bridge the gap between basic drills and high-stakes competitive play. The addition of the scoring systems has completely changed our practice dynamic. Instead of guessing if a touch landed, students are now learning to trust the technology, analyzing their \"timing\" and \"right of way\" with the same precision as Olympic athletes. We've integrated the scoring boxes into a \"STEM in Sports\" lesson where students help set up the reels and floor cords, learning the electrical circuitry required to make the entire system communicate. The masks have provided a literal and figurative shield, allowing them to move from slow-motion exercises to full-speed bouts with the confidence that they are protected by the best gear available.\r\n\r\nThe next step for our program is our first \"Inaugural Invitational,\" where our students will host their first-ever competitive matches on campus. Because of your generosity, we finally have the infrastructure to host other schools and clubs with professional-grade scoring. You haven't just funded a team; you've built a foundation for a new generation of San Antonio leaders to realize that the path to the Ivy League or the Air Force Academy is within their reach. Watching them strap on these masks and step onto the strip, I have never been more certain that we are building something that will last for decades.","fullyFundedDate":1776547079432,"projectUrl":"project/building-a-fencing-team-from-the-ground/10199329/","projectTitle":"Building a Fencing Team from the Ground Up","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Vela","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9364296_orig.jpg?crop=500,500,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1752632359519","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9364296"},{"teacherId":9364296,"projectId":9566796,"letterContent":"Subject: Bringing History to Life: A Heartfelt Thanks!\r\n\r\nDear Donors,\r\n\r\nThe arrival of our new primary source collections has completely transformed the energy in our AP World History classroom. In a subject that covers thousands of years, it can be easy for students to feel disconnected from the past. However, having these physical texts in their hands has bridged that gap. When they first opened the books and saw the translated letters, decrees, and personal journals of people who lived centuries ago, the room went quiet with curiosity. These aren't just \"history books\" to them; they are portals to the actual voices of the past.\r\n\r\nTeaching with these texts is quite different from reading a standard textbook. In our classroom, reading is an active, investigative process. We use a method called \"sourcing,\" where students look at these documents like detectives. They aren't just looking for facts; they are analyzing the author's point of view, the intended audience, and the historical context of the writing. These new materials allow me to teach them how to identify bias and corroborate different accounts of the same event—skills that are essential for the AP exam but, more importantly, crucial for being informed citizens in the modern world.\r\n\r\nI've been especially moved by how some of my quieter students have flourished with these resources. One student, who often feels overwhelmed by the fast pace of our lectures, told me that being able to read a direct account from a Silk Road merchant made the Silk Road \"feel like a real place, not just a line on a map.\" For her and many others, these sources have turned abstract concepts into human stories. Because of your generosity, my students are no longer just memorizing dates; they are engaging in a global conversation that has been happening for millennia. For many of them, these aren't just office supplies; they are the keys to managing the overwhelming feeling that often comes with a heavy workload. One student immediately grabbed a set of tabs and said, \"Now I can actually find my notes without flipping through every single page!\" Seeing their faces light up over organizational tools was a powerful reminder of how much they value having a structured space to learn.\r\n\r\nWe have wasted no time putting these resources to work. We are currently in the middle of a deep-dive research project on local history, which involves analyzing dense primary source documents. My students are using their new highlighters to color-code evidence, yellow for dates, pink for key figures, and green for quotes—while using the sticky tabs to categorize their findings within their binders. This system has turned what used to be a messy pile of loose papers into a streamlined \"research hub\" for each student. It has drastically reduced their anxiety and allowed them to focus on the actual learning rather than the stress of lost assignments.\r\n\r\nAs we move forward, the next step for my students is to transform their organized research into a formal presentation. Because they have their evidence neatly filed in their binders, they are already miles ahead in the outlining process. These materials have provided them with more than just physical organization; they have provided \"peace of mind.\" Thank you for investing in their focus, their confidence, and their academic success. As I mentioned in my initial request, I didn't have very many new-ish titles for my students to read; they love the recent additions, including the multi-cultural texts and the variety of genres. Additionally, the big bean bags are a great addition. I have one student in particular who tends to fall asleep in his desk, but he loves the beanbag! Hey, whatever it takes! \r\n We start the class by reading every day for 10 minutes or so. The purpose of this is to build fluency and stamina. When students read published authors, they are exposed to a variety of vocabulary and syntax which can be incorporated into their own writing. As students finish their books, I celebrate them by posting a \"woohoo\" (a colorful cutout of their choice) on the back wall with their names and title of the book. I'm hoping to have the entire back wall covered by the end of the year. We are making great progress! \r\n I also have my students read an \"Article of the Week\" in order to increase student knowledge of current events. They need to know about things that are happening in the world in order to write with fluency on their assessments. My themes for the year are \"Reading is Power\" and \"Language is Transformational\"...butterflies decorate all corners of the classroom. My students are my butterflies. The diverse selection of books you helped provide allows us to introduce a range of critical skills, such as analyzing theme, identifying author's craft, making inferences, and drawing text-to-self connections. More importantly, these texts invite our students to reflect, ask questions, and think deeply about the world around them.
