We have put them to use right away. As I started the school year, I was able to read one book each day. We would then have a discussion on the emotions in that book. Included in that discussion is what to do when we have those emotions. With the help of these books, my students have gained problem solving strategies, emotion recognition, and an increased enjoyment in books and the stories they tell. \r\n\r\n We will continue to revisit these books as the school year progresses. The Little Spot books have become a favorite among my students. They love the little companion stuffy that comes with each book. We have also been able to use the sorting bins, to color code with the emotions and sort emotions into their corresponding colored bin as an activity. Recently, in our reading and writing blocks, we have been learning about characters. We learned that characters have emotions. My students are making the connection between the spot characters and emotions. They are now beginning to apply those emotions to their own characters in writing. \r\n\r\n In my classroom I have English Language Learners and students with special needs. I have particularly found these books beneficial to these students. They have provided my students with examples, in a fun engaging way. I have noticed these students light up when they see the visuals on the pages of the books. We discuss the characters in the stories as well as the events that are happening. \r\n\r\nI am also using these books for student independent practice. They get to come over to the book bins and pick out 3-4 of the books that look interesting to them and take them back to read. This has been amazing.
