This book aligns with our New Jersey Holocaust studies standards. Not only does it reach the standard, but it also brings my special education students an opportunity to be in a more inclusive environment to read this book their peers are reading in the general education classroom. As a special education teacher, my mission is to provide inclusive experiences for my students by bringing them materials their peers are doing in a way that can motivate them and expand their thinking. I have done this before many times like the time when I taught 8th grade and the whole grade was doing Romeo and Juliet- how would my students reading at a 3rd grade level read Shakespeare? Well, we got it done. I found a lower level text. We did it. And it has always been my approach for my students. It is what they deserve- the experience to feel a part of something bigger. \r\nRight now we are half way through the novel and they get excited about coming in to read each day. My students are typically hard to motivate this year; but not for this unit. They have been itching to know what Michael discovers next as he works his way through the Hitler Youth. We have been expanding their vocabulary, strengthening our contextualized sentences, making inferences, evidence-based predictions, and journaling from the point of view of our main character, Michael. It has allowed them to think critically about the political state of Germany in WWII and how they themselves can make a positive change at their age in their own country. \r\nThe themes of this novel have ignited incredible discussions about doing what is right, when is is appropriate to lie, and loyalty. This has been such a rewarding experience to be able to do this with my students and I couldn't be more thankful for your support to make this happen. \r\n\r\nThank you so much for your contributions- big and small- you have made a difference in the lives of my special education students!!","fullyFundedDate":1775369562740,"projectUrl":"project/projekt-engage-my-7th-grade-students/10179895/","projectTitle":"Projekt Engage My 7th Grade Students!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. O'Connell","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/2974700"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_80707","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":924,"numTeachers":79,"percentFrplEligible":4,"percentAsian":40,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":46,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":7,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":4,"gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"11.7:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":77.8,"schoolId":80707,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Tenafly Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Tenafly Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-jersey/tenafly-school-district/tenafly-middle-school/80707"}
