We began reading Schokolade this last week. The story was about a young boy from Morrocco who was struggling to fit in to his school in Switzerland. The boy was bullied because of where he came from and that he was different. The students in my class really identified with the character in the story. When I read books in German with my students, we do our best to connect with the characters and reading this book really increased the interest level of the class and allowed us to create a positive classroom culture.\r\n\r\nReading in a foreign language is tough, but it allows us to slow down and discuss what is going on. It also provides a context for learning the language. Some days we just read in a circle, and we do volley reading and translations. We also use the audios of some of the books to do listening while reading. \r\n\r\nYour donation helped me to be empowered to have real conversations with students in German within the context of stories. It provides a non digital opportunity to have real talk, honesty and authenticity while learning. Thank you again for everything. I wish you a very wonderful day.","fullyFundedDate":1746838998591,"projectUrl":"project/reading-the-rocket-ship-to-learning-ger/9185584/","projectTitle":"Reading, the Rocket-ship to learning German!","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Dabb","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8547120_orig.jpg?crop=3024,3024,x0,y1008&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1753107598734","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8547120"},{"teacherId":1250715,"projectId":9133666,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generosity in supporting our English II students at Temple High. We were able to purchase 3 classroom sets of the novel \"Long Way Down\". Students discussed and debated the differences between justice and revenge and tracked the character development of Will Holloman (the main character) as he heads out to seek revenge against the man he thinks killed his brother. Throughout the novel, small and large group discussions helped students to understand where Will was coming from and his dedication to \"The Rules\" --a set of neighborhood norms that Will is trying to uphold by seeking revenge. We analyzed the reoccuring theme of the cycle of violence and how difficult the cycle is to break. \r\nBecause the novel is written in verse, my class enjoyed following along with the audio book which is narrated by the author, Jason Reynolds. Hearing the author read his own words really helped us to analyze the author's purpose in some of the poetic techniques like repetition and structure. In an interview we watched, he discussed that the formatting of the words was intentional to change the speed and create long pauses, and they were able to experience that themselves.\r\nOur students were very engaged with this novel. We had numerous students read ahead and finish the book early because they could not wait to find out what happened. Since many students in these classes are students who struggle with reading, this itself showed how meaningful this novel was to our students. They discussed and analyzed this text more thoroughly, independently, and creatively than any other text this year. I thank all of you for providing us the opportunity to share this novel with them.\r\nOne final assignment was for students to write thank you notes to the donors to explain why this book had an impact. One student wrote, \"Honestly, the book \"Long Way Down\" wasn't just another ordinary book, but it was a powerful exploration of grief, revenge, and an endless cycle of violence. It is the kind of book that stays in your memory for a long time after reading it, and it makes you want to go read it again.\" Another letter said, \"The book Long Way Down will always be on the list of books I really enjoyed reading and will forever leave a lasting impression on me. I think the message of the book was really powerful, and kids all over the world that are going through the same thing or kids similar to Will can relate to it.\" \r\nThank you again for supporting our English II classes by donating these novels. We could not have provided these experiences without your support.","fullyFundedDate":1742949173400,"projectUrl":"project/support-sophomores-with-long-way-down/9133666/","projectTitle":"Support Sophomores with \"Long Way Down\"","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Tomaszewski","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp1250715_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1529336986824","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/atomaszewski"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_11338","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":2342,"numTeachers":159,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":25,"percentWhite":19,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":48,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"14.7:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":75.0,"schoolId":11338,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Temple High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Temple High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/texas/temple-independent-school-district/temple-high-school/11338"}
