Let's not miss the opportunity to promote voluntary reading. Classroom libraries help teach children the importance of reading. Just teaching children how to read is not enough. It is equally important to help children learn to value reading so that they will read, both for enjoyment and for information. Providing a classroom library nurtures voluntary reading habits. Research proves that children who have books immediately accessible to them are successful in learning to read, especially readers without access to books at home. Research also found that children in classrooms containing literature collections read 50% more books than did children in classrooms without such collections. Reading is an essential life skill not only for an individual's development and life chances but for social cohesion and a developed democracy.
