On a rainy day last week they donned ponchos and took water samples from the Bronx River, testing for abiotic indicators including pH, temperature, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, nitrates, and phosphates, and testing for biotic indicators like the presence and absence of pollution-sensitive macroinvertebrates. They had practice in the classroom with the kits you supplied and were able to acquire consistent results when out in the field.\r\n\r\nEven though the wet weather required adjusting, the rainfall was a reminder of the environmental water-wealth of our region, and gave the kids a chance to note how a rainy day increases nitrates and phosphates from farm runoff. All of this adds to an awareness of the watershed and is part of the comprehensive, holistic approach to learning an interdisciplinary class seeks to emphasize.\r\n\r\nYour donation to this ambitious project is greatly appreciated and has a concrete result: students connected the academic work they are doing in class with the environment, cementing a way of thinking about the world that legitimizes instruction and preparation, and helps them think of themselves as agents in a society whose structures often seem overpowering and distant.","fullyFundedDate":1763611988436,"projectUrl":"project/bronx-river-is-a-measure-of-ecological-a/9886367/","projectTitle":"Bronx River Is a Measure of Ecological and Societal Health","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Graham","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp127_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1637075713341","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/127"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_2126","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":576,"numTeachers":24,"percentFrplEligible":27,"percentAsian":45,"percentBlack":11,"percentWhite":18,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":15,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":7,"gradesServed":"K - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"24.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":79.0,"schoolId":2126,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Tag Young Scholars on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Tag Young Scholars","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/new-york-city-dept-of-ed/tag-young-schoololars/2126"}
