Having more than just balls, bats, and gloves has tremendously increase excitement among the players and has helped the coaches better develop player skills. Players have been able to receive more comprehensive batting lessons now that we have tees and hitting nets. Practicing with the training gloves has helped with technique and helped the coaches instill the fundamentals in our players. The players don't like the agility cones and agility ladder so much, but their footwork and coordination have markedly improved. The coaches love them!\r\n\r\nPlayers have been most excited about the tees and nets. Previously, only one student could hit at a time. Now we can have three players getting swings in at once, with two of them receiving specialized instruction from a coach. The other coach and I are excited to see how our seasons progresses. This year, we introduced a Ball Python as our new classroom pet, and the impact on our students' social-emotional learning (SEL) and scientific curiosity has been nothing short of transformative.\r\n\r\nIn a STEM Academy, we strive to bridge the gap between textbook knowledge and the real world. Our new resident has become a living laboratory, but more importantly, a powerful tool for emotional growth. I have watched students who struggle with hyperactivity or emotional regulation instantly soften their voices and steady their hands. The snake acts as a \"calmness mirror,\" providing immediate feedback on the student's own emotional state.\r\n\r\nMany of our students arrived with a natural apprehension toward reptiles. By observing and eventually interacting with our python, they are practicing systematic desensitization, learning to replace fear with curiosity and factual understanding. \r\n\r\nIn a Special Education setting, some students feel like they \"don't fit the mold.\" Seeing a creature that is often misunderstood being loved and cared for resonates deeply with them. It reinforces the idea that being different is not something to be feared, but something to be studied and celebrated.\r\n\r\nThank you for making this unconventional, life changing learning tool a reality for our building.
