I asked my principal to allow me to teach it because believe that it is important for students to understand what happened and how they can help prevent genocides from happening again. I want my students to stand up when they see injustice happening in the world and to never be bystanders. \r\n\r\nThrough the Soles of Memory project, my students conducted research and learned about a survivor or victim of the Holocaust. This allows them to see the stories of real people, rather than just a statistic they've been told about for years. Making the connections to victims' lives empowers them to not be bystanders, but to be upstanders who help those who need it.\r\n\r\nAfter researching and creating an exhibit-style page for their person, they designed a memorial for them with symbols, quotes, facts, and details about their life for the canvas shoes that you purchased. The idea for this project comes from the thousands and thousands of shoes that were found at concentration camps after World War II. We want these shoes to tell the story of a person, not just an artifact that was unfortunately left behind or taken from them. \r\n\r\nThis project has inspired some of my students to go beyond just what was required of them for the assignment. One has even read and purchased multiple books, watched documentaries, and has started writing her own story based on what she learned about the victim. Almost every day, she will come up to me with something else interesting that she has discovered about the person she chose.\r\n\r\nOur project was also featured in an article in the school newspaper, and we will be putting the shoes and exhibit pages on display in the library for other students to see and learn, moving the impact beyond just my classroom and into the whole school. \r\n\r\nOverall, I would just like to express my sincerest gratitude to you for providing my students with this new opportunity to create a memorial for a person impacted by the Holocaust and I hope that in doing so they become global citizens who stand up for what is right, even when it is not easy.","fullyFundedDate":1766580220338,"projectUrl":"project/soles-of-memory-every-step-tells-a-stor/9861157/","projectTitle":"Soles of Memory: Every Step Tells a Story","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Robinson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-3_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10333944"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_1762","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1230,"numTeachers":67,"percentFrplEligible":54,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":6,"percentWhite":69,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":12,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":9,"gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"18.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":60.3,"schoolId":1762,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Swansboro High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Swansboro High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/north-carolina/onslow-county-school-district/swansboro-high-school/1762"}
