Each day the students or I read aloud a chapter from the novel while everyone follows along with their own copy of the book. As we read we have class discussions about the events of the book, the characters, and how it relates to the history of our country. In order to support students' understanding of the historical events referenced in the novel, they are also completing research projects and engaging in other social studies activities as we read. For example, we did an M&M tax simulation to model the taxes placed on the colonists by the British government, and groups researched different taxes/acts/causes of the war to present on and teach their classmates about. I love reading historical fiction with my students because it is an engaging and exciting way to learn about a historical time period and discuss the effects on different groups of people through the characters in the book. I particularly like that this book has a female main character, as this is less common in historical fiction books, and the students are enjoying the action in the book!","fullyFundedDate":1747734477653,"projectUrl":"project/sophias-war-empowering-students-to-be/9356270/","projectTitle":"Sophia's War: Empowering Students to Be Readers, Writers, and Historians","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Simonovich","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10035973"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_39956","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":41,"numTeachers":3,"percentFrplEligible":32,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":70,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":21,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"13.7:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":90.0,"schoolId":39956,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Summerland Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Summerland Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/carpinteria-unified-school-district/summerland-elementary-school/39956"}
