While many people think of music class as singing, playing instruments, and moving, one of the most anticipated moments of our younger students' lessons is gathering together to listen to a musical story. John Feierabend's SongTales combine beautiful picture books with traditional folk songs, allowing students to slow down, listen, imagine, and simply enjoy music. These stories help students develop steady beat, musical memory, listening skills, expressive singing, and an appreciation for folk music while creating a calm, welcoming moment during an active school day. Even my older elementary students still light up when I occasionally pull out a SongTale for them—they may be growing up, but they never outgrow a good story.\r\n\r\nThe First Steps in Music curriculum materials have also transformed my teaching. The books are filled with hundreds of singing games, movement activities, echo songs, call-and-response songs, finger plays, and folk songs that build musical skills in a playful, developmentally appropriate way. Because the curriculum offers such a wide variety of activities, I can introduce fresh songs and games throughout the year instead of repeating the same few lessons. Students build strong musical foundations while staying excited about what we'll do next. They aren't just learning songs—they're developing tuneful singing, accurate rhythm, expressive movement, careful listening, creativity, and confidence through joyful musical experiences.\r\n\r\nThank you for investing in these resources and in my students. Your support has helped create a classroom where children feel safe to sing, move, listen, laugh, and grow together. These books and curriculum materials will continue to enrich music lessons for many years, giving thousands of students the opportunity to experience the joy of making music together.","fullyFundedDate":1752586458085,"projectUrl":"project/sing-me-a-story-first-steps-to-musical/9456318/","projectTitle":"Sing Me a Story: First Steps to Musical Joy","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Mayo","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp2191754_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1458072908221","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mayo-music"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_122106","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":568,"numTeachers":23,"percentFrplEligible":41,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":66,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":30,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":1,"gradesServed":"K - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"24.7:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_REMOTE"},"inStateSupporters":null,"schoolId":122106,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Stocktrail Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Stocktrail Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/wyoming/campbell-county-school-district-1/stocktrail-elementary/122106"}
