The first lab they were able to complete was a Stoichiometry Hot Chocolate lab. They had to convert all of the ingredients of homemade hot chocolate into realistic units using stoichiometry. Once the amounts were calculated and approved, they were able to make their own individual hot chocolates! Since the hot plates have the capability of both heating and stirring, they were able to mix all of their ingredients evenly to create a nice hot chocolate drink for them to enjoy.\r\n\r\nThe day all of the boxes came in, they were all stacked at the front of my room, taking up most of my class space! My chemistry students knew exactly what had arrived and were anxiously awaiting their first lab. Every student came up and helped me unbox all of the hot plates, cleaned each one by hand, and found an open spot in the room to organize/store them. Of course the first thing they had to test was the stirring capability. They got out a beaker and filled it with water, dropped in the stir bar, and were mesmerized by the effect. \r\n\r\nMy next steps, now that I have the appropriate equipment, is to continue the hands-on learning with chemical reactions. The ability to both heat and stir simultaneously is crucial for certain reactions. I am now able to demonstrate and allow students to compete reactions on their own, helping students gain a better understanding of reactions. I hope to continue nurturing young minds with hands-on experience that will grow their curiosity and interest in the sciences.","fullyFundedDate":1765752560899,"projectUrl":"project/hot-plates/9910832/","projectTitle":"Hot Plates","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Philpott","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10358006"},{"teacherId":4009857,"projectId":9982222,"letterContent":"My students have been able to keep the love going, since my last project was *just* short of a few items (thus the name of this project).
