The very first time we walked into the room, their faces lit up—several students clapped, others pointed and smiled. For many of them, this was the first time having a calm, dedicated space designed just for their needs when overstimulated or overwhelmed.\r\n\r\nWe are already using the things in the classroom daily. For example, one student who often feels overwhelmed has started choosing to spend a few minutes with the bean bags and sensory mats before returning to work. That short break helps them reset, and afterward they are more focused and ready to learn. Another student loves the fiber optic lights and uses them as a way to self-soothe during transitions. Watching them discover the tools that help them regulate their emotions has been incredible.\r\n\r\nThe sensory room has quickly become an essential part of our day—whether it's calming after a stressful moment, preparing to focus on a lesson, or celebrating with movement breaks. It has given my students a safe, supportive environment where they can succeed not only academically but emotionally.\r\n\r\nOur next steps are to continue teaching students how to use the space independently, giving them the skills to recognize what their bodies need and choose the tools that work best for them. Thanks to your generosity, they now have the resources to grow, self-regulate, and thrive in school.","fullyFundedDate":1746785877931,"projectUrl":"project/regulate-and-recharge-a-sensory-room-in/9261206/","projectTitle":"Regulate and Recharge: A Sensory Room Initiative","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Prince","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10002018"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_121200","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1830,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":83,"percentAsian":3,"percentBlack":20,"percentWhite":67,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":4,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":59.3,"schoolId":121200,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Southside High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Southside High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/louisiana/lafayette-parish-school-system/southside-high-school/121200"}
