As you will read in my student letters, they often don't have the newest materials, so they appreciated having books in such great condition. I was able to do a variety of fun activities with my students while reading these books. For instance, we worked on vocabulary that we found within each chapter, we discussed the bigger themes like growing up and making the right choices, and we even compared the book to the film. We also discussed the growth of characters over the whole book, opposed to in just a short story. Their favorite part was the ambiguous ending, and they had a lot of fun discussing what could have happened after. \r\n\r\nWhile teaching this book, we often read the story aloud and paused to discuss. Many students volunteered to read aloud, and this helped them gain confidence. After each few chapters students would fill out questions in their journals. These questions were comprehension based, opinions on events in the story, or connections that the student was making. \r\n\r\nWhile there weren't any specific students that especially enjoyed the book, my classes as a whole really seemed to like it. Many of them had not read a dystopian novel before, and they found the concept very interesting. They also liked to consider the choices they would make, or how they would feel, since the main character was very close in age to them.
