My students are in the midst of reading lots of great novels. The third graders are loving the novel, The One and Only Ivan. They are using their math skills by designing a zoo and incorporating the perimeter and area for all of the animal habitats. They are learning about animals and how their habitats are a crucial part of all life cycles. The fourth graders are enjoying the novel, Holes, but of course! It is a great novel. They are completing a family tree project and connecting how their ancestors have impacted their lives like the main character, Stanley Yelnats learns. Finally, the fifth graders have read Number the Stars and are completing a timeline of the book events and connecting them to factual events of WWII. They will start the novel, White Bird, soon. This novel has a similar setting and theme. They will compare and contrast the two novels and the characters. Having these novels has helped me to ensure my students are receiving rigorous reading instruction and making it also enjoyable. We are very grateful you gave us these opportunities!
