Students are using the charcoal paper, Conté crayons, blending cloths, drawing pens, and erasers in still life and observational drawing projects. One memorable moment was during a value study, when students began to really understand highlights and shadows by layering charcoal and blending with the sham cloth. Seeing them problem solve in the moment adjusting pressure, erasing to pull highlights, and reworking areas; showed a deeper level of engagement and understanding.\r\nWhen students first saw the professional grade materials, they were excited and eager to begin. Many had never worked with charcoal paper or Conté crayons before, and they immediately noticed the difference compared to regular classroom supplies. While some students were hesitant at first, they quickly became more confident as they experimented with mark-making and blending techniques. These materials encouraged them to take risks, get messy, and let go of perfection, which led to more expressive and personal work.\r\nMoving forward, students will continue to build on these skills by creating their own still life drawings, recreating famous artworks using measuring techniques, and developing their own unique style based on what they have learned. These materials are pushing students to think critically, solve problems, and make intentional artistic choices. Students are actively using these materials in expressive drawing projects that focus on mark-making, emotion, and personal storytelling. One standout moment was during an expressive charcoal self reflection project, where students experimented with smudging, layering, and erasing to communicate mood. The tactile nature of the materials encouraged them to work more intuitively, helping them connect their hands, thoughts, and emotions to the artwork in a meaningful way.\r\nWhen students first saw the materials, they were excited and curious; many had never worked with professional charcoal paper or white Conté crayons before. Several students immediately commented on how different the materials felt compared to standard classroom supplies. While they loved getting messy and experimenting, they also had to learn to let go of control, which led to powerful conversations about process over perfection. This struggle ultimately helped students gain confidence and take creative risks.\r\nMoving forward, students will continue building on these skills through more advanced value studies, expressive figure drawings, and emotion based compositions. They are beginning to understand how artists use contrast, texture, and mark-making to communicate ideas and feelings. Because of your generosity, my students now have access to materials that allow them to fully express who they are, deepen their artistic skills, and feel seen through their work.","fullyFundedDate":1511630236809,"projectUrl":"project/charcoal-cont-exploration/2910212/","projectTitle":"Charcoal & Conté Exploration","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Zumbo","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp4139390_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1481244045675","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/zumbo"},{"teacherId":4139390,"projectId":2914123,"letterContent":"The materials you provided have already made a meaningful impact in our classroom. Students have used them across multiple classes Drawing 1, Drawing 2, Painting 2, Foundations, and AP Art; to create a variety of projects, including personal connection ink paintings, mandalas, and detailed drawings. One of the most powerful moments was during our color theory unit, when students used the bamboo inks to explore how colors flow and interact. Watching the ink naturally blend and spread helped them truly see concepts like analogous and complementary color schemes in action, rather than just reading about them. This hands on experience brought the learning to life in a way that wouldn't have been possible without these materials.\r\nWhen students first saw the professional quality inks and tools, they were both excited and a little intimidated. Many had never worked with materials like these before. There was a noticeable sense of curiosity and anticipation as they began experimenting. The bamboo inks, in particular, have been a favorite because they allow for freedom and movement. At the same time, students have had to learn to let go of control, something that can be challenging, but also incredibly rewarding. Through this process, they are building confidence, taking creative risks, and learning that mistakes can lead to unexpected and beautiful results.\r\nAs we move forward, students will continue building on these foundational color theory concepts by applying them in more complex and personal projects. They are beginning to make connections between how color is used in art and how it appears in everyday life, such as in advertising, branding, and media. Our next steps include more advanced compositions where students intentionally choose color schemes to communicate mood and meaning. Because of your generosity, my students now have the tools—and the confidence—to explore, experiment, and grow as artists in ways that will stay with them far beyond the classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1522181110187,"projectUrl":"project/color-theory-at-the-drop-of-ink/2914123/","projectTitle":"Color Theory at the Drop of Ink","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Zumbo","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp4139390_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1481244045675","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/zumbo"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_100923","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1096,"numTeachers":81,"percentFrplEligible":47,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":2,"percentWhite":54,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":36,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":4,"gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"13.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":60.9,"schoolId":100923,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about South High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"South High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/wyoming/laramie-county-school-district-1/south-high-school/100923"}
