Your generosity is helping us create opportunities for our 5th and 6th graders that many of them have been missing. Our students have not had access to a functioning school library in years, so having new books available in our classroom gives them the chance to explore stories, discover new interests, and enjoy reading beyond what they find in their textbooks. These books will help students build vocabulary, strengthen reading comprehension, make inferences, identify themes, and learn to support their thinking with evidence from a text. Most importantly, I want my students to see reading as something fun and exciting, not just another assignment.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading means having choices, sharing recommendations, discussing characters, making predictions, and getting lost in a good story. I want my students to feel excited when they pick up a book and curious about what will happen next. Having access to a variety of grade-level books helps students build confidence, develop a love of reading, and discover that there is a story out there for everyone. The classroom essentials, such as pencils and construction paper, also help us complete activities and projects that allow students to share their learning in creative ways.\r\n\r\nThank you for investing in our students and helping make these opportunities possible. Your kindness means so much because you are helping us do more than put books on a shelf. You are helping our students build confidence, explore new worlds, and discover the joy of reading. As a 7th and 8th grade reading teacher, I have seen firsthand how providing students with engaging, relevant, and hands-on learning experiences can increase their motivation and help them become more confident readers and thinkers.\r\n\r\nBecause of this project, my students were able to participate in learning experiences that connected reading and writing skills to their own lives, experiences, and Appalachian heritage. Rather than simply learning skills from a textbook, students were given opportunities to make personal connections, share their voices, collaborate with others, and see the value of their own experiences in the classroom. These experiences helped students become more engaged in their learning and encouraged them to take greater ownership of their work.The materials provided also allowed me to accomplish things in my teaching that would have been much more difficult without this support. \r\nI am incredibly grateful to the Bezos Family Foundation for investing in teachers and students and for providing the resources needed to make learning more meaningful. The impact of this project will continue beyond the materials themselves because it has helped me create richer learning experiences and has given my students opportunities to learn in ways that are personal, engaging, and memorable.\r\n\r\nThank you for believing in teachers, supporting students, and helping make these learning experiences possible.","fullyFundedDate":1782685412471,"projectUrl":"project/project-charge-at-school/10353833/","projectTitle":"Project Charge at School","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Tolliver","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-5_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10539008"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_121004","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":545,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":97,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":1,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":0,"gradesServed":"K - 8","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_REMOTE"},"inStateSupporters":60.0,"schoolId":121004,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about South Floyd Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"South Floyd Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/kentucky/floyd-county-school-district/south-floyd-elementary/121004"}
