As an early-career elementary art teacher, having access to hundreds of hours of professional development, lesson plans, and research-based resources has felt like having a team of mentors right beside me. I've been learning from experienced art educators across the country, exploring new strategies for classroom management, culturally responsive art lessons, and creative approaches to building students' confidence in the art room.\r\n\r\nOne highlight of this experience has been participating in the on-demand workshops—especially sessions on integrating contemporary artists into elementary curriculum. Through these sessions, I learned how to design choice-based centers that empower students to make artistic decisions, experiment with different materials, and see themselves as real artists. This was something I'd always wanted to try, but didn't feel fully prepared to implement until now.\r\n\r\nA specific idea I've already brought into my classroom is a lesson on storytelling through mixed-media portraits. I adapted it from one of the NAEA lesson libraries, and my students lit up when they realized they could combine drawing, collage, pattern, and symbolism to tell their own stories. I watched even my most hesitant artists engage deeply, proudly explaining the meaning behind the colors, textures, and symbols they chose. Seeing them express themselves so confidently reminded me exactly why this professional learning matters.\r\n\r\nThank you for investing in my growth as an educator and for believing in the power of art education. Your support has strengthened my teaching and opened new creative opportunities for every student who walks into my classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1759149648035,"projectUrl":"project/membership-to-national-art-education-ass/9746505/","projectTitle":"Membership to National Art Education Association","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Strong","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10274052_orig.jpg?crop=1360,1360,x820,y120&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1758544461235","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10274052"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_21308","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":377,"numTeachers":26,"percentFrplEligible":10,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":93,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":2,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"14.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":100.0,"schoolId":21308,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about South Davis Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"South Davis Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/orchard-park-central-school-district/south-davis-elementary-school/21308"}
