They know that the class is a balance of hard work and a deserved day of relaxation and connection. Students make connections, tell jokes, smile, and make memories. They are making new friends and finding that hard work pays off.\r\n\r\nI also noticed that I can use the games as a carrot! The students will work towards a common goal if they know that the reward will be some time to relax. I never thought of using the games as positive reinforcement, but I now see what a powerful motivator the games are for students! Now that I see that games can be used in a variety of ways, I wonder how else I can use the games? My students walked in on the first day and I was able to greet them with a beautiful newly decorated classroom. I was fortunate enough to have about ten students come in prior to the beginning of school and help decorate my desk with the vinyl paper that was purchased. I also had them help place the vinyl dots on my huge brick wall that literally had nothing on it. It was so nice to walk in with soft colors and soothing atmosphere. \r\n\r\nThe school supplies that were provided have been helpful as I have six large groups of six students in the class and it is vital to have more than one stapler and tape dispenser. My classes are part of the Mental Health Pathway at my school, so we like to do a lot of outreach. It is nice to have meaningful welcome banners outside my class.
