Having a class set has made such a meaningful difference in our fifth-grade classroom. As every student has access to a copy, we are able to experience the novel together while still giving students the opportunity to interact with the text independently. As we read, students are strengthening important literacy skills such as identifying character traits, analyzing how characters respond to challenges, making inferences using text evidence, building vocabulary, and identifying important themes. The novel has also opened the door to meaningful conversations about courage, friendship, empathy, and the difficult choices people sometimes have to make. Students have also brought up how thankful and grateful they are for what they have as the characters in the story did not have something as simple as sugar. \r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is very interactive. We read together, stop to discuss important moments, make predictions, ask questions, and return to the text to support our thinking. Students also have opportunities to talk with their classmates and share different interpretations of the characters and events. Having a book in every student's hands has made these conversations much more accessible because everyone can follow along, revisit a passage, and point directly to evidence that supports their ideas.\r\n\r\nOne of the most rewarding parts of this project has been seeing students become invested in the story. Students with different reading abilities are able to participate in our conversations and experience the same novel together. I love hearing their reactions, questions, and predictions as we read and watching them make connections that go beyond simply understanding what happened in a chapter. Your generosity has given my students an opportunity to grow not only as readers, but also as thoughtful and empathetic learners. My students have absolutely LOVED the puzzles! There was one moment in particular that was extra special; one of my students that is non-speaking actually VOCALLY labeled each of the animal names while doing the puzzle! It was so special to hear his voice and get to tell his parents about this incredible milestone.\r\n\r\nOf course my other students LOVED the puzzles when they saw them too. Several of them instantly went to them and started playing with them! My medically fragile students were also so excited to have different materials to practice their grasps with!
