This project allowed all 5th grade students to participate in a grade level read aloud, learn and practice new skills, enjoying reading and discussing with friends, and to check one of the Oregon Battle of Books off their reading list. The students thoroughly enjoyed each time we met as a grade level and each time the book was read in individual classes.\r\n\r\nLearning to read critically and annotate as reading is a skill that will help this group for many years to come. We focused on finding and discussing different literary elements, including personification, flashbacks, and imagery. The discussions were lively and lead to many insights from the students.\r\n\r\nEach class read most of the book in their own rooms. We met as a grade level to read together four different times. Each interaction had more insights, interactions, and thought provoking ideas. It was a wonderful experience to see all the fifth graders grow as readers and enjoy being in a book club.","fullyFundedDate":1746644848037,"projectUrl":"project/interactive-obob-read-aloud/9292004/","projectTitle":"Interactive OBOB Read Aloud","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Kester","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8131050_orig.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1705510359329","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8131050"},{"teacherId":8131050,"projectId":9244277,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generosity. The students are having a blast reading all the new books we received. I did a quick book talk for each book, but the students are sharing their thoughts and feelings about the books with each other. My class loves our reading time at the end of the day, especially when they partner read.\r\n\r\nOne of the ELL students is especially excited to read the Who Would Win series, which has two different animals battle it out. The student has been sharing all kinds of interesting facts they are learning about different sharks and other sea life. The science books are also a big hit in the room, as we did a unit on scientists and inventions.\r\n\r\nAll of these wonderful series and OBOB books are helping the students make the end of the year push. We are reading the book Fifty-Four Things Wrong with Gwendolyn Rogers, a OBOB book. Many of our fifth grade students are on OBOB teams and have to read the book, but the rest of the students don't always have the opportunity to check the OBOB books out. This is the team's way to make the book available to everyone in the grade.\r\n\r\nIn addition to the opportunity to read an OBOB book, the team uses the book to teach how to annotate. With this book, we are focusing on the skills of relating the text to self, to another text, and to the world. The students find these items and underline them during the read aloud. At the end of each chapter, we stop and share and discuss what we have found. As students are sharing, more annotations are added. This is a great way to show the students how books relate to themselves and the world they live in. The students love read aloud time, especially when are able to get the entire grade level together to do it.","fullyFundedDate":1727998124017,"projectUrl":"project/obob-read-aloud/8828982/","projectTitle":"OBOB Read Aloud","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Kester","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8131050_orig.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1705510359329","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8131050"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_54780","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":431,"numTeachers":28,"percentFrplEligible":23,"percentAsian":12,"percentBlack":4,"percentWhite":57,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":11,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"15.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":80.5,"schoolId":54780,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Sexton Mountain Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Sexton Mountain Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/oregon/beaverton-school-district/sexton-mountain-elementary-school/54780"}
