Our students were truly elated when the games arrived—there was immediate excitement, lots of \"Can we play this one today?\" and an overall boost in positive energy the moment they saw the new materials.\r\n\r\nWe're using the games during speech-language therapy sessions as high-interest motivators and structured practice tools. The games have been especially effective for increasing student engagement, improving attention to task, and supporting communication skills in a natural, meaningful context. For example, during a recent small-group session, students practiced turn-taking, requesting (\"I need.../Can I have...?\"), asking and answering questions, and using complete sentences while playing. One student who is typically hesitant to initiate communication began independently requesting turns and commenting on peers' choices because the activity felt fun and low-pressure—exactly the kind of functional communication we want to build.\r\n\r\nStudents were excited and eager to participate. Several students asked to explore the games right away, and even students who sometimes need extra encouragement to engage were immediately interested. The novelty of the materials helped increase motivation, and students were proud to use \"new\" tools in speech—many of them viewed the games as a reward, which made it easier to sustain participation through challenging tasks.\r\n\r\nWe will continue integrating these games into ongoing therapy targets to strengthen students' communication across settings. Next steps include using the games to systematically support current goals such as following directions, expanding expressive language (describing, explaining, and storytelling), improving articulation carryover through repeated practice, and building pragmatic skills like perspective-taking, flexible thinking, and conversational turn-taking. We'll also use them to promote generalization by encouraging students to use targeted skills with different communication partners (peers and adults) and in increasingly independent ways.\r\n\r\nThank you again for your support. Your donation is making speech therapy more engaging, meaningful, and effective for our students—and it's helping them build communication skills they can use every day in the classroom and beyond.","fullyFundedDate":1757120392971,"projectUrl":"project/voices-in-bloom-growing-communication-s/9605528/","projectTitle":"Voices in Bloom: Growing Communication Skills","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Bre","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10179842_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1755821267219","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10179842"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_58161","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":747,"numTeachers":41,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":6,"percentBlack":10,"percentWhite":3,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":77,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 4","studentTeacherRatio":"18.2:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":70.9,"schoolId":58161,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Sevilla Elementary School-East on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Sevilla Elementary School-East","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/arizona/alhambra-elementary-school-district-68/sevilla-primary-school/58161"}
