Over the years, I've tried many ways to teach these concepts such as drawing, online simulations, etc. \r\n\r\nI wasn't able to use these physical models for my normal classes this year due to timing (they arrived at the end of our unit). However, I did test the models on a few small groups of students. I was impressed at the difference it made in student understanding. They were better able to visualize (and later describe) DNA as a long chain of connected nucleotides. Students could actually see how the RNA polymerase enzyme unzipped and then re-zipped DNA to make the RNA copy. They had a tactile experience with how each tRNA only fit a specific set of nucleotides as it brought a particular amino acid to the ribosome, and how the amino acids attached together to make a polypeptide. \r\n\r\nMy students that tested the models told me that the models were very helpful and they wished they had been able to use them initially. \r\n\r\nI'm looking forward to using these models as the basis for my Central Dogma unit next year in Biology, and as an initial review in AP Biology!","fullyFundedDate":1768411668714,"projectUrl":"project/hands-on-manipulatives-for-the-central-d/9917172/","projectTitle":"Hands-on Manipulatives for the Central Dogma of Biology","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Matell","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp4019779_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1477076225100","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/4019779"},{"teacherId":6829672,"projectId":9791012,"letterContent":"Your generosity is making our concert uniforms look even better. We've seen a significant decrease in the duration of sensory meltdowns. \r\n\r\nVarious fidgets have become essential tools during floor time and direct instruction. By keeping their hands busy, students who previously struggled to sit still are now able to maintain eye contact and process auditory information much more effectively.\r\n\r\nThe most beautiful impact has been the culture of empathy and equity. This space isn't just for students with identified disabilities; it's a sanctuary for everyone. My AP Biology students have done several labs using the machines. We started by running some food coloring and stains to get students used to the machines and protocols. Some of my students are in a biotech program and have done gel electrophoresis before while for others this was their first time - it was really cool to make groups with \"skill leaders\" and watch my students teach the technique to their peers. The food coloring / stain prompted some good questions about how gel electrophoresis really works because some of the sample run backwards due to a different charge. This forced all students to really think about what was happening. \r\n\r\nLater, we used a lab kit focused on lemur conservation biology. In this lab, students examined data about a small population of lemurs and made hypotheses about whether the population was comprised of one or two species. Then they ran DNA samples and compared the number and size of fragments. This lab allowed us to take advantage of the built-in blue light by using a special stain, which let students easily view their results in real-time without any additional staining steps. \r\n\r\nThese machines make running gels quick and simple and allow students to do all the steps in a time-efficient manner. I look forward to finding additional ways to integrate them into my curriculum in future years!
