These games target comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, and other essential literacy skills in a way that feels exciting and engaging for my students. Instead of simply practicing strategies on paper, they are actively using what they've learned while playing, collaborating, and challenging themselves. One specific moment that stood out was when we used a vocabulary matching game connected to our novel study. Students were not only eager to participate, but they also began using the new words naturally in their discussions about the book.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the new materials, their faces lit up with excitement! Many of them couldn't believe they were \"allowed to play games\" during reading time, and they quickly realized how much fun learning could be. Several students who are usually hesitant to participate during reading lessons were the first to jump in, showing how motivating these resources are. Their joy and energy filled the room, and they immediately started asking, \"Can we play this again tomorrow?\" That moment confirmed just how powerful these tools would be for their growth.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, our next steps are to incorporate these literacy games into small-group rotations so every student gets targeted practice in the areas they need most. We're also planning to create our own classroom versions of some of the games, where students will design questions and challenges based on what we're learning. This not only reinforces their reading skills but also gives them ownership over their learning. Thanks to your generosity, my students now see reading as something interactive, fun, and worth working hard at—setting them up for continued success this year!","fullyFundedDate":1745846938005,"projectUrl":"project/game-on-unlocking-the-joy-of-reading/9036062/","projectTitle":"Game On: Unlocking the Joy of Reading","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Forasiepi","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9888874_orig.jpg?crop=1720,1720,x1155,y215&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1753921177176","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9888874"},{"teacherId":1767960,"projectId":9206170,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for supporting our project! The arrival of the Chompsaw cardboard cutter has sparked a wave of excitement and inspiration in my STEM classroom. My students are thrilled to finally have a tool that gives them the freedom to bring their creative ideas to life in a way that feels real and empowering.\r\n\r\nWhat's most exciting to them is the ability to use a tool that mimics real-world equipment — safely and effectively. They feel like true inventors and engineers! The Compsaw has quickly become one of the most popular tools in our room. It allows for smoother, cleaner cuts than scissors ever could, which means students can now create more polished and functional designs.\r\n\r\nOne 5th-grade student is currently working on an airplane game and has been cutting out precise, uniform pieces for his project. A 4th grader used the saw to create detailed game pieces for her board game. While they could have technically done this with cardboard scissors, they both commented on how much more professional and \"real\" their projects feel with the Chompsaw. There are no jagged edges, and their parts fit together with ease.\r\n\r\nMy 5th graders, especially, are soaking up every moment they get with this new tool. Many of them are a little sad that we received it so close to the end of the year — they'll be moving on to Junior High soon — but they are forever grateful that they got the chance to use it before they go. These final weeks of STEM are feeling extra special because of your generosity.\r\n\r\nYour gift has made a lasting impact. Every day, students eagerly ask, \"Are we using the tablets today?\" Watching their confidence and creativity grow as they explore the world of coding has been truly inspiring.\r\n\r\nBecause the students were so engaged, I expanded our use of the tablets beyond just ScratchJr. They've used the camera feature to document other STEM projects, participated in a digital scavenger hunt, and explored additional educational apps during fast-finisher time. These tablets have opened up a world of opportunities for hands-on learning and self-expression. This technology has transformed our STEM classroom by giving students the opportunity to engage in hands-on, screen-free coding. They love how small and interactive the robots are, making them easy to use and fun to experiment with. The ability to code without a computer has lowered the barrier for many students, allowing them to focus on problem-solving and creativity rather than being intimidated by complex software.\r\n\r\nThe most exciting part for my students has been the VEX arena, where they can test their programs in real-time. They are eager to see if their code works as expected, and they quickly learn how to troubleshoot and make improvements. The arena turns every lesson into a challenge, fostering teamwork, perseverance, and excitement for learning. I have also enjoyed incorporating other subjects like storytelling and math into our coding activities, helping students see the connections between STEM and the real world.\r\n\r\nSome students who were initially hesitant about coding have truly flourished with the VEX Robots. The hands-on, interactive nature of the activities has helped them build confidence and take ownership of their learning.
