Students collaborated with one another to create a design plan for their own sculpture. During this planning time, students used art vocabulary and shared their hopes and visions for their creation. As students started to build, they worked on strengthening their fine motor skills as they carefully threaded beads on to the wire and twisted the wire to hold the shape of their sculpture. Students then worked with adults as they used pliers to clamp the metal at the end. This project brought so much joy and curiosity to our classroom! Students were so proud of the work they completed. The materials funded through this project allowed this transformation to be successful. Students took on various roles of being customers, cashiers, hairstylists as they engaged in pretend play. Students have been peeling and placing stickers along various lines to help develop their pincer grasp and strengthen hand-eye coordination, tearing and gluing paper to create images, drawing shapes using markers as they work on proper grasp and pressure. We were able to begin to explore them at the end of last year and begin using them at the start of this year during our individual and group math lessons. \r\nIn a recent lesson, using the Number Blocks materials, the students were able to compare the relative sizes of the characters and apply that understanding to the concept of consecutive numbers. They were then able to independently write the numbers in sequential order without additional adult support. \r\nMath can be a challenging subject for students as much of it is abstract, and when we can make it both concrete and fun by using engaging tools and materials, students are able to make gains in their understanding and skills. These materials allow them to apply real meaning to abstract math concepts.
