For the launch prior to reading \"La Guerra Sucia\" (The Dirty War), I split the class into groups of three and they picked a sub-topic from a list I provided: \"Evita\", Juan Peron, Mitochondrial DNA, Las abuelas de la Plaza de Mayo, the disappeared ones, etc. They conducted research and summarized their findings in a common Google Doc. They connected their findings to the events surrounding the Dirty War in Argentina in the 1970's. \r\n The second part of the launch was an art project. They were asked to draw a picture or symbol of what they are learning about this unfortunate event in Latin-American history. We walked down to the school library to begin reading the novel. The library has more comfortable chairs, and it feels like a great environment to be reading a book! Because students had an historical context through our launch topics, they dove headlong into this historical fiction book. A reporter from New Jersey is asked to travel to Argentina to investigate rumors of citizens disappearing. The immanent danger was easy to predict because they already had a sense of the historical context. After reading the first two chapters a student commented, \"That book is so interesting!\" So the provided pictures are of them conducting research, completing art projects, and reading.\r\n I live seeing students settle in with a book and just READ, especially when they like the book. Thanks so much for helping my classroom afford a classroom set of books, not just to read, but as a spring board to important conversations about the role of government, grassroots responses of concerned citizens, and sometimes the personal cost of reporting the truth.","fullyFundedDate":1770156418924,"projectUrl":"project/easy-readers-for-spanish-3-students/9846482/","projectTitle":"Easy Readers for Spanish 3 students","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Swartzentruber","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-3_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6141925"},{"teacherId":10336255,"projectId":9865693,"letterContent":"With the addition of chart paper, markers, clipboards, and Post-it notes through DonorsChoose, students are now able to interact with texts in a more hands-on and collaborative way. These materials have transformed literacy stations into spaces where thinking is visible. Students annotate passages on Post-its, track patterns on chart paper, and use clipboards to move freely while staying focused on their tasks. This physical engagement with reading encourages deeper comprehension, as students are not just passively consuming text but actively responding to it in meaningful ways.\r\n\r\nThe flexibility of these tools has also empowered students to take ownership of their learning. At stations, they work together to discuss themes, analyze characters, and support their ideas with textual evidence, often recording their thinking in creative and personalized formats. The use of markers and chart paper allows groups to present their ideas visually, making connections clearer and discussions more dynamic. As a result, students who may have been hesitant to participate in traditional whole-class settings are now more confident contributors in smaller, student-driven environments.\r\n\r\nOverall, these supplies have significantly increased engagement by making literacy both interactive and student-centered. Movement between stations keeps energy levels high, while the variety of tasks ensures that all learners can access and connect with the material. Students are more motivated, collaborative, and invested in their work, leading to stronger comprehension skills and a more positive classroom culture around reading and analysis.","fullyFundedDate":1770934199239,"projectUrl":"project/high-school-literacy-centers/9865693/","projectTitle":"High School Literacy Centers","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Pinkerton","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10336255"},{"teacherId":10310607,"projectId":9823875,"letterContent":"Thanks to the new resources, my students are engaging with our lessons in deeper and more meaningful ways. We've been using the materials daily, especially during hands-on labs and group work. One standout moment was during a recent project when students did a lab where a mess was accidentally made and they came together using the supplies granted to clean it up themselves! \r\nWhen the students first saw the materials, their reaction was pure excitement. They were eager to explore, asked thoughtful questions, and couldn't wait to get started. Several students even commented that it felt \"more like real learning\" and that the materials helped them understand concepts that had previously felt challenging.\r\nI have also been able to laminate student work and notes to keep the memories forever! They'll be using the resources to practice, reflect, and demonstrate their understanding through final projects and presentations. Because of your generosity, my students are more motivated, more confident, and better equipped to succeed. Thank you for giving our donors a meaningful glimpse into our classroom and for making this learning experience possible.","fullyFundedDate":1763498707400,"projectUrl":"project/ms-smiths-journey-to-a-better-class/9823875/","projectTitle":"Ms. Smith's Journey to a Better Class!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Smith","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10310607"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_44649","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1048,"numTeachers":59,"percentFrplEligible":72,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":37,"percentWhite":25,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":29,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":6,"gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"17.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":55.9,"schoolId":44649,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Seaford Senior High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Seaford Senior High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/delaware/seaford-school-district/seaford-senior-high-school/44649"}
