My students are so excited to have the new Finches in our classroom. My 7th graders had so much fun learning to program them. They even gave them names! Our first day using them, they held races, had them play music, and programmed them to precisely circumnavigate our lab tables without falling off.\r\n\r\nMy 6th graders cannot wait to get started with them. They are constantly asking when we get to try them out. They will have the joy of experimenting with them tomorrow and I can't wait to see what they can do with them. They are going to LOVE them!\r\n\r\nYour donations helped make this joyful learning possible. I cannot thank you enough for contributing to this project. I'm still amazed by how quickly you all responded to our request. Within days, our shelves were filled with diverse stories that represent the beautiful spectrum of identities our students are discovering and exploring. The enthusiasm and support you've shown for our Rainbow Library initiative has been nothing short of heartwarming. Many of you not only purchased books from our wishlist but also included personal notes of encouragement that I've shared with the members of the GSA. Your commitment to helping build an inclusive learning environment speaks volumes about the kind of community we're fortunate to have surrounding our school.\r\n\r\nThese books have already made a profound difference. Middle school is such a critical time when students are figuring out who they are, and seeing themselves reflected in literature tells them they belong. Your donation has given our students the gift of feeling seen, understood, and valued exactly as they are. You haven't just given books—you've given our students validation, community, and hope. Thank you for making our classroom a place where everyone belongs.\r\n\r\nYou should have seen how excited the students were when the books arrived! They immediately volunteered to help set up our Rainbow bookshelf, carefully arranging the titles in rainbow color order, naturally. It's become the focal point of our classroom. What's even more inspiring is that the students are now talking about organizing a fundraiser so they can help create similar collections in other classrooms throughout the school. They're so proud of our Rainbow Library that they want every student to have access to these important stories. Your generosity hasn't just impacted my classroom - it's sparked a movement of inclusivity led by the students themselves.","fullyFundedDate":1743022928488,"projectUrl":"project/read-the-rainbow/9179277/","projectTitle":"Read the Rainbow","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Duenas","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp4477801_orig.jpg?crop=2320,2320,x0,y394&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1578334842523","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/duenas"},{"teacherId":4477801,"projectId":8953053,"letterContent":"\"You know, this book is actually tough.\" While this compliment may see a tad backhanded, I assure you that coming from a 14 year old non reader, it is high praise. When our copies of the graphic novel \"American Born Chinese\" made their way into the hands of our students, the were an instant hit. Many of our kids who once declared themselves non readers were now very voraciously consuming a text for the first time. It wasn't uncommon to hear that a student \"accidentally\" read past the daily page allotment in excitement. Moments like that as a teacher are promising and a sign that students are engaged in their learning in new and exciting ways. Using the text as our anchor, we were able to craft our own graphic novels and explore the history of Asian American immigration through some deep and compelling discussions.\r\n\r\nLikewise, Jason Reynolds poetry book, \"For Everyone\" inspired students in a wholly different way. His work challenged students to think abut their hopes and dreams for their futures and how they might claim them. Students then used his text as inspiration to write and perform their own collection of poems that they crafted. This was a new and nerve wracking experience for my students and yet with Jason's guidance, they persevered. As he taught them in his book, it is important when confronted with challenges, it is important that we \"jump anyway.\" None of this would have been possible had it not been for your generosity and kindness. Thank you sincerely for your donation.","fullyFundedDate":1737257754859,"projectUrl":"project/unleashing-our-inner-readers/8953053/","projectTitle":"Unleashing Our Inner Readers","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Duenas","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp4477801_orig.jpg?crop=2320,2320,x0,y394&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1578334842523","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/duenas"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_120809","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":353,"numTeachers":5,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":6,"percentBlack":59,"percentWhite":23,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":5,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"5 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"70.6:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":65.5,"schoolId":120809,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Science Leadership Academy Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Science Leadership Academy Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/pennsylvania/philadelphia-city-school-district/science-leadership-academy-middle-school/120809"}
