This text introduces important literacy skills such as making inferences, identifying themes, understanding character development, and using evidence from the text to support ideas. Beyond reading skills, the story encourages meaningful discussions about empathy, perseverance, problem-solving, and what it means to belong — lessons that strongly resonate with my students.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is highly interactive and supportive. Students follow along in their own copies of the book, track text with their fingers, annotate key moments, and participate in guided discussions. We pause often to make predictions, clarify vocabulary, and connect the story to real-life experiences. Having individual copies has increased engagement, confidence, and independence, allowing students to fully participate at their own pace while still feeling part of a reading community.\r\n\r\nSeveral students who previously struggled with stamina or confidence have shown noticeable growth and excitement. Some students eagerly volunteer to read aloud, while others light up during discussions because they feel connected to Roz's journey. Seeing students proudly hold their own book, reference specific pages, and share thoughtful insights has been incredibly rewarding. This project has truly transformed our reading block, and it would not have been possible without your support.","fullyFundedDate":1760727420970,"projectUrl":"project/novel-study-book-needed/9794314/","projectTitle":"Novel Study Book Needed!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Driscoll","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8139746"},{"teacherId":8139746,"projectId":9761471,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generous support, our small group instruction has become more organized, engaging, and effective! Your generosity provided mental health workbooks, blank cards with envelopes, appreciation stickers, sensory strips and fidgets, colored pencils in inclusive skin tones, and dry erase markers for our community whiteboard. \r\n\r\nWe are setting up a gratitude card workshop for November where students write notes to peers and staff, a calm tools basket for readers and writers who need a quiet reset, and small group check ins that use simple workbook exercises on self compassion and anxiety skills. The whiteboard now hosts daily prompts for kindness and coping tips, and students are taking turns as wellness ambassadors to keep messages fresh and inviting. \r\n\r\nStudents are responding with curiosity and care, choosing colors with intention, trading ideas for encouraging phrases, and reminding each other to use the calm tools during challenging moments.\r\n\r\nNext steps include a rotating student team to curate the whiteboard, short peer led wellness shares during classes, and a portfolio of gratitude notes that classes can deliver across the building. Together these resources honor student identity, voice, and community care, which is at the heart of our work on racial justice and representation.\r\n\r\nWe use the books to guide restorative language and clear routines. We use the display pens to bring more voices to the board. Timers help students manage time on task. Fidgets offer calm focus for readers and writers. Board games build teamwork and respectful communication during independent time. Cleaning tools support shared responsibility and pride in our space. When students first explored the materials the room felt both calmer and more energized. Some reached for the timers and fidgets, others asked to lead at the board, and many smiled as they chose a favorite pen for notes.\r\n\r\nNext we will open short restorative circles to finalize our class agreements, annotate mentor texts at the board, and reflect on how these tools support learning and well being. During the past few weeks, we have been engaged in studying a new unit, \"The Life Cycle of a Plant\". This unit has provided the students with an understanding of the role plants in the environment, while making connections to the natural world around them. \r\n\r\nThe students read many nonfiction books about plants and shared the information they learned with peers. They even wrote facts in their journals. In addition, they had fun reading nonfiction stories, which had a planting theme, such as \"The Carrot Seed\", \"The Little Red Hen\", and \"The Tiny Seed\". \r\n\r\nWe have now begun a hands-on project, which entails having each student plant their own flower seeds. Each morning the students observe their planted seeds for growth. This project has allowed the students to have fun while learning to use their observation and inquiry skills. As the plants grow, I hope to hear the students using new vocabulary used, such as sprout, roots, and stems. Most importantly, I hope the students are able to create fond memories.
