Coloring books and sheets have also been popular in allowing my students to bring calm into their day with a low stakes activity. \r\n\r\nAs a school counselor, I will continue to provide my students opportunities to express themselves in a variety of ways, like the art materials that were funded with the help of wonderful donors like you. As a result of receiving these resources, I was able to establish a firm standing Calming Corner in my school counseling office. My students are able to stop into my office during the school day and take a break when things get overwhelming. The soft seating and pillows allow my students to find comfort when their day seems to be unmanageable. \r\n\r\nUpon unboxing the bean bag chair, pillows, and calming posters, my students were in awe at the implementation of the corner itself. Once I explained the purpose, my students voiced gratitude for a space where they would be able to let their guard down and decompress throughout the day. It was also heart warming to see my students practice the calming strategies and breathing patterns shown on the posters that were hung up for their use and others around the room that encourage healthy habits.\r\n\r\nWith the new space, I am excited to see my students feel more comfortable with coming to school with an area where they can regulate themselves if needed throughout the day. By learning coping skills from the posters provided, I will continue to expand their knowledge of self-regulation and how they can listen to what they need in the moment in a healthy way. These fidget toys take a center stage on multiple sections of my desk for students to access and explore as they need. Since putting these fidget toys out, my students are able to direct their energy into different types of stimuli that allow them to focus better on our conversations and put them more at ease.\r\n\r\nOnce the materials arrived, I was so happy to see the wonder on their faces at the new types of fidgets that they might not have had experience with before. I had a range of reactions from my students including gasps of delight to excitement in being able to experience the fidgets for themselves. It has been such a joy to see how each student interacts with the different fidgets and learning what they like on a personal level. \r\n\r\nAs we move further into the school year with these new items, I am continually encouraged to help my students explore what coping skills work best for them. Students who are typically hesitant to engage were eager to try out the new seating and tools.
